Summary: Getting rid of the body, and cranky Shinji.
Kippei kept an eye on Shinji the whole way there, and he was careful about the quake he made. Just a crack in the ground, about four feet wide, eight or so feet deep, just big enough to drop someone into. Then he closed it back up, which was harder, but not as hard as he'd been expecting. He'd never tried that before, but it worked pretty well.
Then he straightened, and looked over at his boyfriend. Damn stubborn beautiful thing. He was still slightly frustrated that Shinji was here at all, but he hadn't been prepared to argue it out in Blackguard's room.
"You alright?"
"I'm fine!" Shinji snapped grumpily, and then felt guilty for snapping. He sighed heavily and rubbed his fingers through his hair, messing it up while he struggled to apologise. "Sorry. I'm just...hmph." He was something. His skin hurt from the renewed burn and he was cranky that Bolt had been so difficult the whole way and he was tired, and he was annoyed that Kippei had wanted to do it alone and tried to tell him he had to stay behind. For some reason he couldn't explain he was just....fucking annoyed.
Kippei nodded, drifting closer and studying Shinji carefully, reaching out but not quite touching. He wasn't sure how sensitive Shinji's burn was going to be after this.
"I know," he answered, a bit cautiously. He raised a hand to his own head, brushing dust and dirt out of his hair. Cracking the ground open even a little tended to make a bit of a mess. "How are you, though? Really?" He gave Shinji a sharp look, wondering if Shinji would really snap at him if he pushed the issue, but needing to know exactly what the damage was, here. He sighed, wishing that Shinji didn't think letting Kippei take care of him meant that he was weak or something.
Little clumps of dirt trickled out of Kippei's hair and it smelt really good; that deep earthy scent that Shinji always thought of as Kippei. It was a little soothing and helped to calm his temper which was ridiculously out of control. He reminded himself that Kippei was just trying to help but it didn't help him any. He tried to think of why he was so annoyed but there wasn't a reason. He wished he could hear things, but he had burnt out again, having not recovered properly prior to the kill. But it wasn't that. He had the customary headache and his skin was pulsing with his pulse and felt hot, but that wasn't it either. The more he thought about it, there was no reason for him to be acting like some angry little kid. He was just being annoying. He took a deep breath and waved a hand.
"I'm...its fine. Everything's fine. ....you're really cool." And that was true at least. Shinji loved watching Kippei use his powers; could watch it all day.
Kippei shook his head. Right, and he was a turnip. Everything was fine, bullshit. But okay. Enough for now. He reached for Shinji's hand, holding his out and waiting in case Shinji didn't feel like taking it.
"Alright then," he answered, smiling just a bit, because yeah, that had been damn cool. "Let's go home." This was not the end of this conversation, but now was not the time or the place to have it. Things were obviously not fine, but Kippei didn't know how they were not fine, and Shinji was not in a mood to talk about it. So they wouldn't talk about it. Yet.
He wanted badly to just wrap his arms around Shinji and give him a hug, like the one Shinji had given him before they left on this damn mission, but he wasn't sure if he wouldn't be hurting Shinji more if he did that. So he stood waiting, patiently holding out his hand.
Hand. Shinji reached out without even thinking about it, taking the hand and wincing a little at the odd tingle that ran up his arm. It didn't hurt though, not really. It just felt hot and tight and it was blue again. Great. He took a few fast steps to get closer to Kippei, wanting to go home, to their room since he didn't need the quiet room without his powers, and he wanted to see Kii and crawl under the sheets and cuddle Kippei and not get up until he was a normal colour again.
"I'm blue again," he noted glumly, as if that explained his rather foul mood.
Relieved, Kippei took his hand and made a conscious effort not to squeeze too hard, and debated on cutting Shinji's gravity, but that might annoy him further at the moment. In the end he left well enough alone, though it bothered him a great deal and he kept glancing over surreptitiously to see how Shinji was doing. He needed... god, what did it matter what he needed right now? Shinji needed to get home and he needed his overprotective boyfriend to stay off his back.
Annoyed with himself now, Kippei sighed, maybe Shinji's mood was catching.
"I like you blue," he said again, for the thousandth time, but he said it in the absently rote voice of a man who is repeating himself and does not expect to be heard this time, either.
Kippei was annoyed at him. Great. Shinji tugged hard on his hair, and then was annoyed when it hurt, which had been the whole point. He was going insane, that was all there was to it. That tone in Kippei's voice worried him, because he had never heard it before and maybe he'd done something really stupid, to make Kippei sound like that. Biting his lip, Shinji tasted blood and sighed because he hadn't meant to bite it that hard, but it was sort of good, giving him something specific to focus on.
"Sorry." He even kind of meant it.
Sorry? Kippei looked sideways at him, startled. What the hell was he sorry for? "Why?" He was truly puzzled, and definitely worried. Shinji didn't look good, at all. Did he bite through his lip? Jesus.
He'd been worried that Shinji was hurting, physically strained by the energy he'd expended, but it seemed like it was something else. Shinji looked frustrated and sad and maybe a little scared, and Kippei didn't like any of that.
"It's okay," he said softly, hoping that would help until he could get Shinji home and... well, he wasn't sure what he was going to do, but it was something. Something that he couldn't do here.
Shinji wanted to scream at him that it wasn't okay; that he was blue and it hurt and everything was bloody annoying and he was hot and cold at the same time and Kippei was acting weird, but he couldn't bring himself to yell at Kippei, when he wanted to hug him. He ran forward a few steps until he could wrap his arms around Kippei's waist, burying his face in Kippei's back and inhaling deeply, sighing in relief at the dark earthy smell.
"I don't know why. I dont know what you're thinking so I don't know what to be sorry for. Sorry." The words were muffled by Kippei's shirt but that was okay.
Kippei let out a surprised breath of air, relieved and worried all at the same time. Why what? God, he was confused now. He wrapped his arms around his middle, hugging Shinji's arms, and then lightened him, gently disengaging Shinji's hands and giving him a slight tug to lift him up, draping Shinji's arms over his shoulders. Whatever. Shinji was not walking all the way home. Not when Kippei could feel him here like this, hanging on.
"There's nothing to be sorry for," he murmured, turning his head back to kiss Shinji's temple when it was close enough. Nothing at all. He started walking again, his own gravity slightly lessened in order to walk without jarring his passenger.
They were floating? Right, because some people still had their powers, which was good. Kippei should never lose them because he was the coolest mutant alive and Shinji thought he might die if Kippei was ever not a mutant. And he said he didn't have to be sorry, which was good because Shinji didn't feel like walking but he didn't want to have to be sorry for Kippei carrying him either, so whatever. He hugged his arms tighter around Kippei's shoulders and shifted until he could get his legs wrapped around his waist so he wasn't just hanging there, and he rested his head on Kippei's shoulder, closed his eyes and dozed because god he was tired and sore and cranky as hell. He didn't think he had ever been this annoyed, especially not without a focus for his annoyance.
"How come I'm all cranky? Doesn't make any sense," he murmered against the skin of Kippei's throat.
Kippei hummed an acknowledgement that was not an answer, more like a shrug, but he couldn't shrug at the moment with Shinji wrapped around him, so he didn't. He didn't know why Shinji was cranky, but he was willing to bet that it had to do with his burnout, for the second time in as many weeks, and thus was more of a cause for worry than irritation.
"I love you," he said randomly, smiling a bit, leaning forward and watching the ground as he walked. Almost home.
Well that felt like a kick in the guts. Even blue, even cranky, all Kippei had to say on the matter was that he loved him. Shinji kissed his throat, nuzzling a little and leaving a dark hickey that made him smirk.
"I love you too." Because no matter what, that was never going to change. Shinji thought someone could erase his whole brain and he would still somehow remember that he loved Kippei.
"Good." Kippei smiled a little more. As long as they were clear on that part. He walked into the building with a sigh of relief, making his way down the halls the shortest way to their room. Time to get Shinji home and get some rest, for both of them. And talk, maybe, except Shinji seemed to be feeling a little better now... but Kippei still had questions, at some point.
He pushed open the door to their room, almost too focused on Shinji to take his customary look around and make sure everything was as they'd left it, but nothing seemed out of place, so he went straight over to his bed and let Shinji down. Now, that was a hell of a lot better.
Oh God, their bed! Or Kippei's bed. Shinji restrained himself from just crawling under the blankets, since he had to get out of his dirty clothes anyway, and instead looked over at his own bed, eyes falling on the blue fluffball already making a grand leap over the gap between them and crawling up beside him. Shinji grabbed Kii and cuddled him by way of hello, petting him and murmering soft little cat sounds at him. He felt a little better, not as on edge and cranky, somehow. Dumping the cat on his pillow he tugged off his shirt and kicked off his pants, then frowned, not wanting to put on his boxers.
"Kippei....give me one of your shirts?"
Raising an eyebrow, halfway through his own undressing, Kippei reached out and grabbed a clean shirt, throwing it at Shinji. He smirked faintly as he watched Shinji put it on--it was more than a little too big for him. Damn, that was cute.
He finished shucking his dirty clothes and found a clean pair of boxers for himself, then hit the lights and headed for the bed, not bothering to do anything more than that as far as cleanup for now. They were both tired, and it could wait.
Shirt! And it smelt like Kippei; hell, it was Kippei's. Shinji grabbed Kii and yanked the sheets back, crawling between them and dumping Kii down by his feet, restraining a little laugh as the cat licked his toe. Hmm....bed. Warm. Good. Kippei...
"Hurry up...and turn off the light!" And god, Shinji, stop demanding shit! He groaned at his own demands and hid his head under the pillow. He caught a disease off Ryuzaki; it was the only logical explaination.
Kippei chuckled, a low rich sound of laughter as he slid in beside Shinji, feeling better just to have him home and safe and beside him, where they could lay and rest and he could wrap his arms completely around him and just hold him for awhile.
He lay quiet for a minute, just petting Shinji's hair the way Shinji had been petting the cat, and he felt about as content, he thought. But. "So you're cranky, hmm?"
"Oh you mean you hadn't noticed? I didn't know you were deaf blind or stupid, I should pay more attention next time...fuck I can't stop doing that!" Shinji wriggled around until he could lay across Kippei's lap and chest, and he leant into the hand in his hair with a sigh of something akin to relief. "I'm blue, I'm cranky, I'm sore, I've got a headache and I wanna go dig up that old cow so I can kill her again."
Kippei was still smiling, a bit, though he didn't laugh again. He felt rather like it, but he didn't think Shinji would appreciate that. Shinji being cranky was... kind of funny though. He knew it wasn't because of him, at least it didn't seem to be, it was just the mood Shinji was in and it rather amused Kippei. It really wasn't annoying. He supposed it must have something to do with being in love. Shinji hadn't seemed to mind too much when Kippei had been grumpy after he got shot, either.
He stroked Shinji's hair and just held him, wishing he could do something about the headache, too. "You're alright," he murmured, nonsense words that nonetheless made him feel better. "I've got you." I'm going to keep you. No matter what.
He had him alright. Shinji relaxed and just forgot about everything and that was nice; he didn't feel ready to rip anyone's head off when he wasn't thinking about it and Kippei's hands were almost as sexy as his voice and it was peaceful. Calm. Shinji closed his eyes and just listened to their mingled breathing, realising he had been breathing fast; heart beating too quickly and he made that calm down too.
"Dont you dare start thinking at me, I have no idea what you're saying its like goggledidook and it hurts, so don't."
God, Kippei was going to kick him out of bed at this rate.
Kippei smiled to himself, chuckling softly under his breath, and stroked his hair, his own eyes sliding closed. Not thinking at all, because Shinji was cute when he was cranky, but Kippei wasn't going to tell him that.
