Summary: Hanamura and Echizen go visit a prospective student and proceed to reel him in.
Ryoma sighed and glanced sideways at Hanamura, who had just rung the bell of the relatively plain-looking house outside which they were standing. She had insisted he come with on this visit - something about whoever they were going to see might need "convincing." How Ryoma was supposed to do this, he had no clue, but apparently Hanamura had something in mind. He just hoped it wouldn't involve synching something unpleasant.
A moment later the door opened to reveal a teenage boy about Ryoma's age (maybe a little older), with bright red hair and a relatively pleasant expression. He looked at them a bit confusedly, glancing first at Hanamura, then Ryoma. Ryoma met his gaze evenly; this boy was the only mutant he could feel inside the house, so this must be the new student.
Sengoku hadn't been expecting anyone today, especially the two complete strangers at his doorstep. In fact, he'd made sure not any of his friends would visit him today, as somehow all his magazine horoscopes had predicted it would be an unfortunate day for him. He swallowed a bit as his green eyes darted from what looked to be a mother-son pair, and had to wonder if he would have to buy something really expensive from them.
"Hi! Um... could I help you?" he asked the pair with a polite smile.
"Yes," Hanamura said sweetly, smiling down at the new boy. "You must be Sengoku-kun. Is there a parent or guardian home that I could speak with? My name is Hanamura Aoi; I'm from the Ryuhana Academy. This is Echizen Ryoma," she indicated Ryoma, "one of our students."
Ryoma just shrugged and nodded his head in the direction of the stranger. He assumed Hanamura was going to be doing all the talking to the parents, and he'd probably be left with this Sengoku in order to "convince" him if he needed it.
At first when she mentioned wanting to see his parents, he was about to lie through his teeth that they weren't home-- it was just something his parents taught him so they wouldn't have to deal with any door-to-door salespeople. But at the mention of Ryuhana Academy, he couldn't help doing a double-take. "THE Ryuhana Academy??" he asked them aloud, eyes sliding from Echizen back to Hanamura; what'd >he do to catch their attention? "...I'm not sure if you've got the right family," he told them hesitantly.
"I'm quite sure we do," Hanamura said smoothly, her smile never wavering. "And yes, we do represent 'the' Ryuhana Academy. Is there someone home I could speak with? I have a few things I'd like to discuss with them; you're welcome to speak with Echizen-kun while we're busy," she said, giving Ryoma a small shove in the small of the back. He glanced up at her, annoyed, before looking back to Sengoku with another shrug.
"Hey," he said this time. "F'there's anything you wanna know about your power, I c'n tell you." Because that was very obviously what he was here to do now.
Sengoku stepped back slightly when the other teen was pushed forward, confusion evident on his face. "Yeah.... my mom's home and-- wait, what??" he burst out, something clicking in his mind at the word, 'power.'
"Wonderful - I'll show myself in, then," Hanamura said, deftly sidestepping both Ryoma and Sengoku, leaving them both standing on the doorstop staring at each other.
Ryoma watched Sengoku blink confusedly a moment before taking a step back again, indicating the yard with a nod of his head. "She does that," he said, wondering why the hell he was apologizing for Hanamura's lack of manners - but this poor kid looked pretty confused. "You wanna hang out here? Or maybe in the back - f'you wanna see anything, might be better. You definitely have powers." The other boy was unmistakably a mutant - Ryoma's inner sense never lied. Got confused, maybe, he thought unhappily - but it was never wrong.
Sengoku quickly turned, hand going up futilely to signal for her to stop, but she was already gone. He would've gone after her but he had a certain teenager already at his doorstep. Spinning around, he stared at Ryoma with a look of disbelief, which soon melted into one when someone realized he was being made a fool of. "No.... you're kidding, right?" he laughed hesitantly at Ryoma. Oh yeah, they got him good. "I think if you and your mom just ran me over, you would've gotten inside much quicker than pretending you're from there," he commented honestly.
Ryoma stared. Holy hell. "She's not my mother," he said flatly - that wasn't something he even wanted to think about. That was… gross. Pushing that thought aside, he fixed the other with a harder look. "M'not kidding. I c'n tell when someone's a mutant, and you're definitely a mutant. "What d'you do?" It was much easier to synch someone and show them what they did if he knew what it was beforehand. Especially if it was a passive power, which this boy probably had, seeing as he didn't look strange and also didn't seem to believe Ryoma in the first place.
And if he didn't believe… **This's Hanamura's power** he said wordlessly, directly into the other's mind.
This was quickly becoming a staring contest as Sengoku's jaw just snapped shut. He stared long and hard at Ryoma's face, particularly his mouth until he exclaimed, pointing almost accusingly at the other teen, "....You're GOOD. But maybe you should do that with an acutal puppet first."
…What. The hell. Ryoma rolled his eyes. "It's not an act." Tempted though he was to use Hanamura's powers to knock the stupid kid out, that probably wasn't what she'd brought him here to do. Well. Fine then. "F'you don't believe me, then let me guess what your power is. F'I can get it right and show you what it does, s'that more convincing?" It'd better damn well be, in his opinion - but then, if Sengoku didn't believe him, it was Hanamura's problem and not his.
"Um... it would be... if I actually were a mutant," Sengoku mused, hand poised thoughtfully at his chin, eyes raised slightly to the sky.
Ryoma sighed again and prepared to move his shields. "Don't move." He spread them out in the direction of the other boy, waiting until they'd completely encompassed Sengoku and his power had found the other's, latching onto them. He paused a minute, trying to get a feel for what they were.
It felt like… luck? He frowned, thinking - yes, it definitely felt like something to do with probabilities. And changing them. He could make something incredibly lucky happen - or unlucky, depending. Though right now the former sounded better. "S'luck," he said out loud, glancing around. Now what the hell was he supposed to –
Traffic. The road in front of the house was fairly busy. And despite his protests, Sengoku's abilities were pretty powerful. Closing his eyes a moment, he tried to gauge whether or not he could walk out into the road and keep from getting hit. And after a minute, he was pretty damn sure he could. He glanced at Sengoku with a smirk. "I'll prove it to ya." And took off for the street.
Against his better judgment, Sengoku didn't move when he was told not to, but it didn't seem like the other teen was going to attempt anything. But before he knew it, he was witnessing Ryoma charging headlong into a very busy street that his cousins had been told twenty times a day not to go near.
Well, it looked like Ryoma was the one who needed most of that lectures.
Sengoku's eyes widened as the other teen suddenly dashed straight for the middle of traffic. "H-HEY STOP!" he panicked, forgetting himself and his own prediction of bad luck as he took off after Ryoma as fast as he could. "What are you DOING!?"
Ryoma paused one lane in - he could keep himself from getting hit, but he didn't want to risk not being able to keep Sengoku from becoming a pancake. "Hey, don't," he said, as a car swerved around him, not even ruffling his hair. "I c'n probably keep you from getting hit, but you prolly don't wanna risk that." Training a glare on the other boy, he turned - so he was walking backwards across the road now, holding Sengoku's eyes and he continued across the second lane unscathed.
He noticed something reddish - and glanced down to see his hands were glowing. Huh. He raised one hand, nodding in its direction. "This's you too, by the way."
His heart was pounding when he got to the edge of the road, watching the other teen just waltz backwards in traffic as if it were nothing to him. "Wha--" he was just about to say, that is, until he noticed Ryoma's hands glow that crimson red. One thing was for sure... that Echizen kid was definitely a mutant if he could pull a stunt like that. "What d'ya mean it's ME? It's YOU that's walking through traffic like that!"
"I'm only doin' it because you can. Or will be able to, at least." Sengoku's powers must not be this strong yet - there was no way the other'd still be arguing if they were. "My power's to synch people - I c'n use their powers to their full potential. Right now, yours is nothing like this; you prolly just get really lucky and unlucky days or something, huh?" He stopped, pausing as he saw a 10,000 yen note beneath his foot. He crouched down to pick it up, waving it for Sengoku to see. "Power's got its perks, huh?" Though if Sengoku could be this lucky, he could be this unlucky too. And Ryoma should probably finish this demonstration before something backfired on him.
For some reason, Sengoku was nearly taken aback by the statement. Yeah, it was true that he had some really good and really bad days... and yeah, no one else's days fluctuated so badly... but was all that just because of a mutant power?
He'd think about it later when he wasn't about to witness Ryoma get run over.
"Just... come back here, okay? It's not a good day to be doing things like this!" he shouted to Echizen, wildly waving him over.
Ryoma shrugged - though he certainly didn't mind not trying his luck in traffic (pun intented) and started back across the road, crossing the last lane with his eyes closed, feeling carefully for the sidewalk before stepping up onto it and opening his eyes, noting as the glow faded from his hands. Just for good measure, once he was safely away from the road he pulled the shields back around himself and felt Sengoku's powers slip away. He didn't want anything bad to happen to counteract his not getting hit.
"So?" he asked, glancing at Sengoku. "Convinced at all yet? That's definitely your power." And it had looked like he'd hit home earlier, with the lucky and unlucky days.
Once Ryoma was back, Sengoku quickly pulled him awaaaaay from the side of the road, closer to his relatives' house, and let out a huge sigh of relief, both hands slapping down on Ryoma's shoulders. "How-- wha---" He paused to calm his breathing, shaking his head, then stared at the other teen blankly. "...So you're a mutant," he started, wanting something simple to confirm.
"Yeah. And so're you," Ryoma repeated. "Like I said - my power's to use yours, an' I can tell when someone's a mutant in the first place. And you are. Obviously." His power didn't make mistakes, and neither did the school's computer. "Your luck fluctuates - m'I right?"
Sengoku paused, making a little face. "Yeah... but that's only because... well.... it just happens! But I can tell if it'll be a good or bad day if I keep up with the horoscopes," he tried to reason.
"No it doesn't," Ryoma said, wondering how on earth he was supposed to get through to this boy. "The horoscopes don't do anything, 'cept convince your subconscious that your powers should be lucky or unlucky that day." It made sense - if Sengoku didn't believe he really had powers, then they must be under some kind of subconscious control. Which meant that if he read the horoscope and thought it should be a good day, his powers would act accordingly. And vice versa. "F'you wanna control your luck, first step's to admit you can."
Truthfully, Sengoku was still very skeptical about all this. It was obvious that this Ryoma guy was a mutant-- he saw the glowy things!-- and it was possible that all that luck stuff was really just Ryoma's power and he was trying to trick him! ...Why he'd want to trick Sengoku when they supposedly didn't know each other, he wasn't so sure. None of this made any sense (okay, he was lying-- it did make a bit of sense) and he sighed, hands dropping away from Ryoma's shoulders, only to hold his head resignedly. "Oh man... I'm a mutant. I knew this would be a bad day." Sigh. His horoscope was right again.
Ryoma shrugged. "S'not so bad for most people," he said - he couldn't exactly say being a mutant was a picnic, not with his powers, but luck seemed relatively harmless and even very useful if controlled properly. "An' Ryuhana's really not so bad, for the most part." There was Hanamura, and his father, but neither of those things were likely to bother Sengoku the way they bothered Ryoma. "Besides, you wanna live your entire life without control? Things'd prolly only get worse."
He looked up and frowned at Ryoma. "Worse, huh...?" If any of this was true, then Sengoku knew very well it could get worse-- he accidentally burned down his home, after all. What next? Razing his whole neighborhood? That would suck.
"...Wait a sec. Ryuhana has... more of us?"
Ryoma nodded. "Yeah, everyone there's a mutant. People c'n do all sorts of things. Can't say I've ever seen luck before, though." It was an odd power - but then, so was his. And so were a lot of people's; he'd gotten accustomed to categorizing them in his head, since he had to deal with synching so many of them. But he supposed every power was odd in the end. "They try'n train people to control things, though. So you could say whether you wanted good or bad things to happen." Maybe that would help win the boy over - after all, being able to control luck like that could be very powerful.
Huh... he didn't know that. Though, he supposed no one else really was supposed to know. "And that's why you're here? ...It's not some sort of military thing, is it?"
Ryoma shook his head. "S'not some kind of military thing - f'it was, believe me, I wouldn't be there." Nor would his father, God help them all. "S'just a school," he assured Sengoku. "Though we do gotta wear uniforms for training."
He went back over to the house, taking a seat on the front step, waiting for the other to follow him before going on. "An' yeah, that's why I'm there. Hanamura helps keep me shielded so I don't synch every mutant within a hundred meters."
"It sounds like you can eat them up or something," Sengoku joked lightly but he was seriously wondering if Ryoma could do that too. Even so, he stuck by and sat next to him.
"You still have your powers," Ryoma assured the other - though he wasn't sure if Sengoku would be glad or not to hear it. But it wasn't like he stole powers and didn't give them back. "I just use 'em - you c'n still use them when I have 'em too, s'not like they ever go away. I just can't turn mine off yet," he finished quietly. It was something Hanamura couldn't help him with. But he'd learned to live around it until he found a way.
Hn, that sounded like a slight problem, perhaps more problematic than what Sengoku could imagine. But he smiled anyway, poking Ryoma in the arm. "That's okay, I don't even know how to turn mine on yet~"
Ryoma scowled inwardly - he really didn't like admitting that he couldn't turn his powers off and that he was so reliant on using Hanamura's power to keep things in check (most of the time). But Sengoku seemed to be a bit more convinced, by now, so he supposed he'd done his job. And Ryoma could help with that problem, seeing as he'd just done it. "S'not hard - all you gotta do is - "
But just then, the door opened and Hanamura, along with a woman who must be Sengoku's mother. "I'm glad to hear it," the headmistress was saying, before glancing down at the two boys on the stoop. "Ah, there you are. I hope you had fun getting to know each other~"
Sengoku immediately stood, smiling brightly, though just a bit warily, at the other woman. "You're Hana... mura-sensei?" he asked her, making sure he got the name right. He glanced over to his mom and then back at the headmistress. "...So what's going on?"
"Yes, I am," Hanamura said sweetly, stepping out the door and around the boys before turning to look back at them. "I believe we've come to an agreement. Your mother has agreed to let you take classes at Ryuhana," she said to Sengoku. "That is, if you'd like." She said it with the air of someone who already knew the reply.
He glanced over to his mother, who looked pretty happy about whatever they were talking about. Well, why shouldn't she be? He was, after all, being accepted into a big preppy school supposedly. His eyes then lowered to Ryoma for a moment, and really, it'd be nice to get his easy-going, carefree life back.
...Yeah, that sounded really good at the moment. Grinning wide at Hanamura, he nodded his head. "Why wouldn't I want to? Sounds like a pretty good opportunity to me~"
"Excellent," was Hanamura's reply, smiling triumphantly at her new pupil for a moment before glancing at Ryoma. "I do believe we're through here for today, then. If you'll come along, Echizen-kun~"
Ryoma rolled his eyes but stood, glad that at least Hanamura would be in a real good mood now, and not just a fake one. "Yeah."
"We'll look forward to seeing you as soon as you're ready to move in, then," Hanamura finished, speaking to Sengoku once more. "Your mother has my contact information, and we'll get a room set up for you right away."
"Thanks... I guess I should start packing soon then," he smiled at the two of them. All right, so it wasn't a totally bad day, perhaps bordering on good, if he thought about it.
