Summary: Mating season, in a sense. Kamio takes Saeki to the shop where he bought the other mutant's birthday present.
The mall was no more than a couple of dozen shops, but the shops all ran towards what could be called the "high-end" of retail service. They were clean and bright, welcoming the throng of weekend customers into their well-lit interiors with large window displays.
The weekend crowd was dense, but that made it all the more simple for two mutants to wander the corridors without as much as a glance in their direction. Kamio hovered at his boyfriend's shoulder, his fingers threaded into the other boy's hand. Occasionally, he would take a few steps ahead -- when his internal rhythm fell out of check -- then slow down and return to the other's side. Blue eyes skirted through the crowd, more wary than normal.
Yes, Saeki had his mutation well-hidden, and his lover was an expert at blending into crowds unnoticed; that eased the redhead's incessant worry enough that he wasn't dragging the other teen to their destination as quickly as he could. It was just ahead, at any rate, and Kamio felt a small blush creeping onto his cheeks.
It wasn't like he needed a ring, really.
He led the way into the small jewelry store. The shopkeeper looked up from polishing the glass counter, calling out a cheerful greeting. Her face brightened immediately when she recognized the lithe redheaded teen. Kamio wasn't surprised, though he had thought she might be a bit less pleased to see him. He had, after all, agonized for longer than he was used to over the purchase of the simple, white gold band that wrapped his boyfriend's finger.
Saeki fought the grin that found its way to his lips, he really did. Gently squeezing Akira’s hand, the silver-haired mutant forced an expression that one could consider sane onto his face. He let the redhead lead them, trusting him enough to not get them lost and had gained full control of his facial expression by the time they reached the store.
His tail was now wrapped around his right leg, finding it the most convenient manner in which to hide his mutation and his eyes were hidden behind blue-tinted reflective lenses. If he started to spout fur on places other than his tail, Saeki didn’t think he’d be able to come out of the brotherhood without raising alarms anymore. But that was one scenario he didn’t want to think about. Thoughts of having his freedom taken away from him like that creeped the hell out of him more than he would care to admit.
He glanced at the cheerful shopkeeper and smirked when Akira’s face started to take on that familiar hue of red. “You,” he murmured under his breath as he smiled politely at the sales lady. “Blush far too easily, Red.”
If anything, Kamio blushed deeper at his boyfriend's words. He shot the other teen a scathing glare -- though its effect was watered down by the crimson that spread over his face. He felt as if he'd been blushing ever since he had given Saeki his birthday gift. It hadn't been much, he had thought, but the way the other mutant had reacted one would think he'd given his lover the sun. It amazed the lithe redhead that anyone could react so strongly to something so small; truthfully, Kamio hadn't even thought it was the right gift for his boyfriend, even after he'd bought the ring.
Clearly, he'd been wrong, and he was more than relieved to admit that. His silver-haired lover had been thrilled by the gift, even declaring that they were engaged. Not that Kamio had gotten down on bended knee -- and not that he wouldn't have, had the other teen asked him too. The idea was amusing, though he still wasn't sure what to make of Saeki's insistence that he also have a ring.
But, he was going along with it -- if only because it was making Saeki happy.
"So, uhm yeah." The redhead started. He lifted a hand to run fingers through his hair and glanced around the store. "This is where I got it," was all he offered in explanation. A small shrug and another quick look around, then the redhead motioned towards the display case of men's rings.
Teasing Kamio had always been fun. Hell, teasing most people was always fun for him but this time, Saeki wasn’t doing it to see that dusting of red rise up to colour Kamio’s cheeks, no matter how amusing or captivating it was. Selfish reasons would say that he was doing it for himself, a reassurance of the fact that Kamio really was his. But it had started out as a way to assure the redhead that he really was his; that he wasn’t another of those little conquests he was notorious for in high school – not that Akira knew this, of course. It was, he had concluded, a way to say ‘thank you’ without really having to; a simple gesture to let him knew he cared.
This, however, was something he might never tell the redhead. Let him wonder, he smirked and moved towards the glass display, never letting go of his hand despite the odd looks they were drawing. It wasn’t as if homosexuality was something alien to them anyway. He couldn’t care less.
They perched comfortably on stools and Saeki peered at the contents of the glass and they didn’t have to wait long before the sales lady approached, a bright smile fixed on her face as she spoke, her tone polite.
“How may I help the both of you, gentlemen?”
Awkward was about the only word to describe how Kamio felt at the moment. Well, that and a strong sense of déjà vu, because the redhead was pretty certain that he'd sat on this very same stool a week ago.
He had been almost as nervous then as he was now.
Fingers still laced in his boyfriend's, Kamio managed a weak, embarrassed grin at the woman. "We need to look at a…ring," he murmured, then added, "Another one."
Saeki let his lips curve up in a smirk as he released Kamio’s hand so that they could sit properly. His thumb curved up to fiddle with the silver band on his left middle finger and let his boyfriend do the talking. It amused him to no end how such a simple act could make the redhead blush to the roots of his equally red hair.
The saleslady smiled gently, enjoying the teenager’s rather bashful attitude. “It's a pleasure to have you shop with us again. Do you have something in mind then?”
The loss of Saeki's fingers gave Kamio nothing to do with his hands. One laid on the countertop, his nail tapping steadily on the glass, while the newly-released slim fingers ran though his hair. He glanced at his boyfriend as the other teen fiddled with the ring, then back to the display.
At the saleswoman's gentle prodding, the redhead frowned. They hadn't really discussed what type of ring Kamio would get, and if he was bad at picking out something like this for his lover, then picking out a ring for himself would be even worse.
Another glance at his silent boyfriend, then to the smirking saleswoman. No, he wasn't blushing again, he tried to tell himself. "I…have no idea," he admitted begrudgingly.
“Ah,” the saleslady nodded, used to such customers. In the line of service, one had to be prepared for all sorts of customers… including those who did not know what to get for themselves. That was a given, actually. “Perhaps something similar to your boyfriends?”
Saeki tilted his head to the side once more, studying the female human who seemed to find the situation very amusing. He wasn’t sure if it was because of Akira’s blushing or the fact that she was tending to two apparently gay males.
“That would be ideal,” he nodded casually, flashing a fanged grin as he shifted to seat himself more comfortably on the stool, continuing his study of the lady from behind tinted lenses.
Kamio looked up from studying the rings -- well, not really 'studying' them. It was more like staring blankly at the rows of silver, gold and white gold bands. However, he'd still claim it was studying them. Dark blue eyes flickered back and forth between his boyfriend and the saleslady, and he blinked.
A ring to match Kou's? That would be…fine. Great, even. It would be simple, easy to pick out and it would show that they were together. Like, seriously together.
He felt his cheeks heating again.
Ducking his head to hide the small grin that crossed his lips, he nodded. "Yeah, that's great…I mean, that would be fine," he stammered.
Grinning like the spastic idiot he was not, Saeki was glad that he wasn’t prone to sudden blushing as he fiddled with the second ring he held in his palm. It was the twin to the ring he had gotten the other, which he had hesitated in getting. He knew very well that Tezuka would prefer that their relationship remained relatively unknown, if known at all, to the rest of the clan except perhaps to Keigo. Wearing identical rings in public would make it painfully obvious.
Kamio stared down at the dozen or so white gold bands sitting before him. They all looked the same to him, really. Exactly the same. Except some were thinner and others were thicker but what difference did it really make? It was just a ring. It wasn't supposed to be special but it kind of was. If only because it was from Saeki.
Which meant…
Still blushing, he let one hand drop to cover his boyfriend's, then the tray over in front of his silver-haired mutant. "I picked out yours," he reminded the other.
“Point taken,” Saeki conceded, raising his head to meet the gaze of the saleslady. She seemed content to let the couple make the decision and Saeki had to admit that she was handling this marvelously well. After all, it can’t be everyday that a pair of gay men openly walked in to buy a ring for each other. Or something. “We’ll just get the same ring then…?”
That… was the obvious solution, and if Kamio's cheeks weren't already crimson, he would have turned redder still. "That yeah," he agreed, reaching up to the pick through the rings. "That would be good. I'd like that. Think it was this one." The redhead held up a band, then tugged his boyfriend's hand from his knee. Placing the rings next to each other, he glanced at Saeki. "Those look alike to you?"
"Alike and perfect," Saeki drawled, yellow irises studying the metal bands. "Get one your size though?"
Kamio nodded and set the ring he had been holding aside. It was far too large for his thin fingers. A couple minutes of shifting through the pile, he finally pulled out a smaller ring -- the smallest ring of the bunch that still looked identical to the one that he'd just had. He slipped it on his finger and frowned. "Like that?" he murmured, spreading his fingers out so that Saeki could look at the ring.
A slight smile on his lips now, Saeki nodded. "Just like that." Reaching out, he gently clasped the redhead's hand in his, all the while pretending to admire the ring on his boyfriend's slender digit. Perfect. Glancing up at the sales lady he asked politely, a smirk now prancing across his expression. "How much would that be?"
Kamio's hand stilled at the touch, feeling two round, cool objects pressed into his palm. His blush faded a bit, a small smirk crossing his lips in response to his boyfriend's. The moment his hand was released, Kamio palmed the rings in the crook of his fingers, and turned the loose fist to examine his own ring himself. "Yeah…uhm. Good," he agreed to the white gold band with a nod.
Still smiling at the two young men, the saleslady rattled off the price of the ring. The redhead slipped his hand inside the pocket of his jacket for his wallet. "I've got it," he said lightly, as he dropped the rings inside the pocket.
"Don't be an idiot," Saeki gently reprimanded his boyfriend, sticking a hand into his jacket pocket and deftly fishing out his wallet. "It's a present from me to you, remember? You will do no such thing."
Smiling winningly at the lady, the silver-haired mutant regarded her through tinted lenses and handed her a thick wad of cash as the corners of his lips twitched into something of semblance to a smile. "Thank you for your help, ma'am."
Kamio sighed, rolling his eyes and giving the saleswoman an annoyed look. "Fine, fine." He shrugged helpless -- boyfriends, right? -- and extracted his hand from his pocket.
The rings remained behind, in the bottom of the black satin lining.
She took the cash, made them proper change, and smiled as the two mutants headed out the door. Kamio slipped his arm into the crook of Saeki's elbow, leaning close and shoving his free hand into the pocket with the two stolen rings. Keeping his head ducked as they went by the security cameras, the redhead couldn’t help but smirk. His fingers found his boyfriend's, tightening as they walked out of the doors of the small shop and back into the mall.
Once they were well beyond the store, the redhead gave a soft chuckle. Now that the actual process of getting the band around his finger was over -- along with picking up a couple of spares for whatever reason, he didn't care -- Kamio felt nearly giddy. The latent adrenaline in his system no longer spiked with his tension, though he still had a bit too much to deal with for an extended period. Moving easily in front of the other, he smiled and quickly pressed his lips against the silver-haired mutant's.
Wrapping an arm around Kamio's waist, Saeki returned the brief kiss with a gentle swipe of his tongue. Golden orbs twinkled behind tinted lenses as he pressed a kiss to his boyfriend's forehead. Holding their hands away from them, Saeki admired the matching rings before grinning and declaring them
"Perfect."
