Summary: Shinji and Kii visit Oshitari for their 'concert'...music is discussed.

Shinji picked up Kii and wrapped him up in the little blue blanket, then tossed his own over his shoulder before walking out the door, kicking it shut on his way past. He actually had to think for a moment to remember just which door was Yuushi's, which was enough to tell him it had been way too long since he had visited. He listened intently and got some sort of brainwave from the room and felt a little less nervous, because it was just Yuushi, so that was okay. He knocked quietly and didn't bother waiting for an answer, opening the door and peeking around the corner.

"Yuushi?"

Dark eyes snapped open immediately as Oshitari sat up, as he'd been half-dozing at his desk on his habitual scattered stack of papers.

"Shinji-kun, hello." He stifled a yawn, blinking at the other blue-haired mutant before remembering that his glasses were shoved up into his hair. He went to tug them back down, and they stuck in the blue strands, tangled. Grunting irritably, he motioned for Shinji to come in, vacating his seat to unsnarl his hair.

"You'll have to forgive me, Shinji-kun, I have not been getting sufficient sleep. Won't you sit down?" He wrestled his glasses free, frowning at the deep blue hairs that went with them, and scratched the backs of Kii's ears in passing.

Shinji just stared for a bit, listening to the confused, sleepy tone of Yuushi's thoughts, though not the thoughts themselves. He slowly pushed Kii into Yuushi's lap and then pushed Yuushi back into the chair, walking around behind him and carefully reaching out around the glasses, Shinji gently massaged Yuushi's temples, worried.

"You're supposed to sleep enough, otherwise you might fall over when you're flirting with Shishido!"

Oshitari chuckled, setting his glasses aside with a clatter on the desk, and gently pulled Shinji's hands away. "Ah, but I don't flirt with Shishido-san anymore, more's the pity. I happen to like my face just the way it is." Stroking the cat, he flashed Shinji a slightly sleepy smile, his eyes slowly sharpening with his growing alertness.

"I occasionally have insomnia. It's nothing to be concerned with, Shinji-kun, though I thank you for the concern."

"Hmm....well, when you faceplant in the middle of your music piece don't be surprised if I laugh, and I'll laugh for Kii too since he wont laugh, he'll just go and sleep on you because he's like that, but that's okay because I don’t mind laughing for both of us, since its nothing serious." Shinji reached over Yuushi's shoulder to pet Kii lovingly before going and sitting on the edge of the bed.

"What other problems do you have?"

Still stroking the cat, who seemed to have decided he was good enough to sleep on, Oshitari muddled through Shinji's words to the actual question.

"No more problems than anyone else, I'm sure, Shinji-kun. I am sure Shishido-kun and Arai-kun will credit me with having all sorts of mental disorders, but other than some peripheral trifles in my mutant development, I consider myself to be fine." He scratched Kii under his furry blue chin, smiling to himself before focusing back on Shinji again.

"How have you been, Shinji-kun? Tell me, has my gift come in handy yet?" He grinned wickedly.

Shinji didn't know who Arai was really, just knew of him, but he was more than familiar with the things Shishido had to say about Yuushi. It kind of amused Shinji really, since he liked both of them.

"We really like our blankets, and I've been really good because I can curl up by the fire with my blanket and Kippei and have sex, which is really fun, did you know? And it feels really good...I didn't think it would, but it does, but I get a headache the next day, but its not as bad as the first one so its okay I must be getting better."

His immediate grimace at the mention of Tachibana and sex in the same sentence slipped into a frown. "You get a headache? After sex?" His hand stilled over Kii. Several possibilities immediately came to mind, each casting Tachibana in a harsh light, each just as quickly cast aside since he knew the other mutant wouldn't harm a hair on Shinji's head, obsessed as he was. So he could only boil it down to two. "Either the sex is fantastic, Shinji-kun", a statement that made him carefully not think about being ill, "or it pertains to your power...are you using it in conjunction with the act, by any chance?"

"Mmm...I like knowing what he's thinking," Shinji murmured, a faint smile playing on his lips at the thought of some of the things Kippei thought during sex.

"Are you sure you're okay? You keep thinking something about being sick..." Shinji reached out again, resting a hand on Yuushi's forehead, once again worried.

Oshitari waved his hand away, reassuring him. "It's nothing, just a passing thought. I witnessed Shishido-kun being sick when I returned, and happened to recall it." He sat back in his chair, shifting Kii up so that the cat was draped across his bare stomach as he casually crossed his leg over his knee. "It sounds as if your headaches may be caused by overuse of your powers during sex. Perhaps you shouldn't use them so much during the act." Or perhaps Shinji shouldn't go near Tachibana at all, but he was careful in letting the thought go by quickly, aware that Shinji could be upset if he caught it.

At least Shinji-kun's near telepathy was nowhere near as intrusive and calculating at that Hanamura woman's had been. He was well and glad enough to be rid of the constant probing into his mind by that woman, delightful physical specimen that she was.

Not entirely convinced, Shinji nonetheless let it slide, trying to be unobtrusive. He shrugged a little, not prepared to stop using his powers during sex because then maybe he wouldn't know how to do anything and Kippei might not like it as much. He would just have to keep working on trying to control the degree to which he used his powers.

"Is your violin okay?"

He gauged Shinji's reluctance to respond to his comment correctly. He was almost as thoroughly obsessed with his fool of a lover, and there simply was no talking him out of it, even subtly. Oshitari sighed inwardly, letting it go for the moment to focus on the question at hand.

"It is, certainly. I spent last evening tuning and polishing it. Will you be wanting your concert now?"

Nodding enthusiastically, Shinji snatched Kii out of Yuushi's lap quickly and settled on the bed, petting Kii in apology for taking him from his nap spot so abruptly and then looking back at Yuushi expectantly.

"Is it going to be a good concert? I came all the way down the hall to hear you play so you should really make it worth my while I think."

"Mm. A concert worthy of a distance of twenty or so feet..." Oshitari chuckled, unfolding himself to fetch his instrument. "I will try not to disappoint then, Shinji-kun."

He had no piece planned, even as he rested his chin on the rich, gleaming wood of the violin. He flicked a look at Shinji, sitting there with his matching cat, and then closed his eyes, taking up the bow and setting it against the strings. Nimbly adjusting his fingers to the strings, he let the bow saw slowly back and forth, a soft, melancholy melody issuing forth. He let it play out a bit, a warm bit from Mozart here, an excerpt of Brahms there. His body kept time with the music, swaying with the rhythm of the bow. Gradually, he worked the pieces seamlessly together, each one quickly rising in tempo until he was jerking the bow violently to Rachmaninov, to Wagner, to a dark bit he had written himself not long ago. His bowing hand flew rapidly, powerful and elegant, over the instrument, emptying his mind of nothing but the music.

Shinji stared, enraptured, the sound of the violin speaking in a way that was deeper than the kind of thoughts he heard from people, somehow having its own frequency; its own function that sank under his skin and through his bones and ate away at his soul. Shinji could only stare, in awe and wonder and wish that for a moment he could be a violin. That would be perfect. For a brief moment Shinji wondered what it would be like to be under Yuushi's fingers, in his control, then decided that was not something he wanted to think about.

'You wrote that?' He spoke silently, silently with Yuushi's own thought voice, without even thinking of what he had done.

You wrote that? Oshitari's hand slipped, hitting a rather sour note, startled as he was. That had sounded like his own thoughts, but not. Odd. Still, he was calm, relaxed by the music, and he kept playing, slower this time, his eyes cracked open to watch Shinji as he continued.

'The last piece...and this piece here...I composed these, when I needed peace and could find none in the great ones...' With a tiny smirk, he launched into a rendition of the Happy Birthday song...ironic since he had missed Shinji's birthday.

Yuushi won a startled laugh from Shinji with happy birthday and Shinji grabbed Kii's front paws and had him 'dance' to the tune. Yuushi wrote really awesome music. So awesome Shinji found himself listening to it and nothing else, which is what usually happened when Shinji played guitar, but had never happened with anything else before. Shinji assumed it was music in general. Still...

"Can you record it?"

"I could, certainly. I have no need to, however, since I can listen as I play" he teased the boy, smirking. He played a jaunty little version of 'The Cat Came Back' for Kii, tapping his foot with it. His usual preternatural calm from playing was replaced with amusement and something else, having a captive, appreciative audience.

Laughing again, harder this time and petting Kii happily, Shinji watched Yuushi, completely rapt.

"But I want to put it on my mp3 player, to go to sleep to. Can you record it so I can do that?"

"Perhaps, if you wish. Do I get anything in return, Shinji-kun?" Oshitari smiled, amused, as he unstoppingly went into the Jaws theme song, chuckling at Kii's tail which seemed to twitch along to the music.

Snickering, Shinji clutched Kii's tail to try and stop it moving but didn’t hold on too long in case he annoyed the little cat.

"Hmm....I don't know. What would you like Yuushi-kun?"

"Hm...A promise that you'll visit me more often?" Oshitari sent the other blue-haired mutant a tiny smirk. Actually, he was surprised he couldn't think of anything else he could possibly want from Shinji other than that. Except that he dump that fool, Tachibana, but he understood enough to know it most likely wouldn't happen. But he very much enjoyed Shinji's company, and opportunities to visit with Kii as well. A recording was little in way of payment, he thought, for that.

Shinji felt immediately guilty for not visiting Yuushi more and he pushed Kii in Yuushi's direction, snickering as the little cat fell off the side of the bed and grumpily went over to curl up on Yuushi's foot.

"I would come over every day if I could but I don't want to annoy you or anything and sometimes I have to go to training and stupid stuff, but I will if you let me because its fun coming to your room, and you have funny thoughts, so its interesting too...Can I really come over more often?"

"Of course" Oshitari replied, careful not to move his foot as the cat curled up on it. It really was quite the adorable thing with its blue fur...

"I wouldn't be annoyed at all." Curiosity dictated he ask, "What do you mean by funny thoughts, exactly, Shinji-kun?"

"Hmm you're always planning stuff and thinking of what you can do to someone, or how to get what you want. I hear you sometimes when I'm falling asleep and it makes me laugh. You like picking on people, which is bad I guess, but I don’t necessarily like the people you like picking on so maybe its okay, especially since it gives me fun dreams and I wake up laughing sometimes."

It was an effort to not let his jaw drop, but Oshitari managed it. He should have known Shinji had far better reception than he had assumed. He cleared his throat, his playing ceased. "Ah...should I ever pick on someone you do like, please know there usually isn't malicious intent involved, Shinji-kun." He wondered just exactly how deeply Shinji could hear, what his range was. A flash of two faces flitted through his thoughts, and he experienced a quickly buried sliver of fear.

Shinji definitely didn't need to know his plans for everyone.

"I...ah...am pleased you find humor in it though. Most people do not." He placed the bow back on the Strat, playing Rachmaninov's 'Flight of the Bumblebee'.

It was a testament to his state of mind that he was the tiniest bit off.

Cocking his head to the side, Shinji wondered who the two mystery people were, but Yuushi hadn't thought any names, just that there were two of them. That was no fun, and yet it was because Yuushi made things mysterious; nothing was ever easy.

"Hmm, that's the bee song. It's neat...and you're really good on the violin...but I don’t hear you playing very often, how come?

Oshitari waited to reply, finishing the piece with a sense of disgust for playing it so poorly. Rachmaninov himself would have shot him to hear such a shoddy rendition.

"No reason, Shinji-kun. It's often noisy in the hallways and in the house in general, making it difficult to concentrate properly. I generally play a bit every few days, but I've taken to doing so outside most of the time. It...hm...not relax...it focuses me, I believe." He would have moved to put the Strat back into its place, but it meant he would have to dislodge Kii. He stood where he was. "Do you play an instrument, Shinji-kun?"

"Mmm....guitar," Shinji replied, distracted by Kii, who was talking about warm feet and sleeping and needing to use the kitty litter...Shinji sternly told him to wait.

Oshitari smiled, glancing down at the cat himself as he mused, "Perhaps we can orchestrate a duet at some point then..."

Gaping, Shinji shook his head with an emphatic no way. "I can't play with you! I said I played guitar not that I was a guitar genius or anything!"

"How utterly ridiculous, Shinji-kun! One doesn't need to be a 'guitar genius' to play in a duet." Dark eyes regarded the other mutant soberly. "I can certainly play anything you can play, Shinji-kun." He threaded his thumb through a belt loop at his hip, his bow sticking out behind him in the air.

"You look like a cowboy, with a bow instead of a gun which isn’t very cowboyish but still..." Shinji was more than a little terrified by the thought of playing with Yuushi but he figured it would be much better to play with him than against him.

"Hmm....can you play my theme song?"

"You have a theme song?" Oshitari blew an errant strand of hair out of his eyes. For a moment, he wished he had some telepathic ability so that he wouldn't have to constantly ask Shinji to explain himself...and then he nixed the concept completely. He enjoyed conversation with the younger man, and he still retained a general yet refined distaste of telepaths in general.

"Everyone has a theme song...but I've never heard mine. I tried to play it once but I wasn't good enough so I thought maybe you knew it, but maybe you've never heard it either. You should listen to it and learn it so I can hear it." Shinji nodded as if this were the most obvious thing he had ever said.

For a moment, Shinji was stared at as if he'd suddenly grown another head while talking. It took a moment for other possibilities to sink into Oshitari's brain. A theme song...a song. A theme for one person alone.
It would be quite the challenge, to pin down a person in music. Shinji-kun especially...Thoughtfully, Oshitari replaced his bow onto his violin and closed his eyes...something...not soft, exactly...not harsh...not exactly rhythmic or predictable. What came out of the violin was something haunting, dreamy, but disjointed. After a bit he stopped, frowning. He would have to work on this. He tapped the end of the bow against his lips, quite forgetting Shinji's presence for the moment.

He was doing it! Shinji stared, enraptured, completely enthralled. He stayed close to the bed, lying there watching, not wanting to disturb or interrupt when Yuushi was being incredible.

"Hm. This is a difficult one..." Oshitari murmured to himself, trying again. He conjured up Shinji in his mind; focused on that. What came out was more accurate, the hauntingness and vagueness, but less disjointed...more, it required several bits all seamlessly strung together...like water, or the endless shifting of a dream. He still wasn't happy with what he was producing...this would end up a project, his mind already running ahead with music sheets and possible others he could attempt to capture in black notes...

"I will have to think about this one, Shinji-kun" he told the other, distracted by Kii squirming about on his foot.

Shaking his head to clear it of the awe-struck blankness of his own thoughts, Shinji smiled, dangling a hand over the edge of the bed and commanding Kii to come over, petting him happily while he tried to hide the dark blush of delight spreading across his cheeks.

"Only if you want to...but its really cool if you do..."

"I wouldn't have attempted it if I didn't want to, Shinji-kun. It's quite a challenge. Perhaps I will have it perfected by the time your recording is finished." With the cat gone, he set his violin back into its allotted space, gracefully taking out a thick notebook from the bookcase beneath it. It was filled with music sheets, only half of them used. He set it on his desk, opened to an already filled page of neat little black marks and bars, hunting around the stacks of papers for a pen.

Shinji spotted a pen on the floor near the desk and picked it up, rolling off the bed and putting it in Yuushi's hand, then going back to the bed. He made sure Kii could hold the toilet thing before he curled up on Yuushi's bed, feeling sleepy listening to the mechanical, methodical working of Yuushi's thoughts. It was like being on the ocean, only it was a nice comfy bed and he didn’t feel seasick at all.

Oshitari didn't even blink at the sudden appearance of the pen, merely nodded and sat down, methodically scribing what he considered to be the first movement in Shinji's song. He made occasional corrections, alterations, scribbled some variations in the margins...after a while, he looked up, setting the pen aside. Shinji lay on his bed with his eyes closed.

"Shinji-kun? Are you asleep?"

Bugger, the sleepy, ocean-like thoughts were fading! Shinji curled up tighter on the bed and reached out for Kii, satisfied when he felt a furry head brush his hand.

"G'way, Kippei, 'm sleeeeeeep."

Oshitari rolled his eyes, thinking that if Tachibana were in the room to see Shinji relaxed on his bed like that, the room would most likely implode. Still, he smiled to himself, turning back to his desk, his new project.

Let Shinji sleep, if he wanted to. Oshitari made a mental note to himself to take a break and bring food up for his company in a bit. But for now, his thoughts were already shifting to another person, envisioning what sort of melody suited him. Something...seductive. Instinctive. Powerful. Another melody crossed it, one with a punchier, faster tempo.

He was already putting the pen back to paper.
