Summary: Hanamura has charged Ryoma with finding out who caused the earthquake. How? Synch Dan!

Ryoma left Hanamura’s office warily, cracking open the can of Ponta she’d given him and taking a swig, thinking. We'd like you to synch Dan-kun and see if you can do some investigating for us, she’d said. The earthquake last night hadn’t been natural. And he was supposed to get to the bottom of it?

He sighed, taking another drink. He didn’t even know if Dan’s power could be directed like that, but now he was bound to try. This could take a while. Well, he might as well get it overwith – Niou could take care of Karupin, he thought with a smirk.

Closing his eyes a moment, he searched the school for Dan – he’d found that even if people were outside of his synching range, if he’d synched them before he could still kind of… get a vague idea of the direction they were in. It took a moment to sort through the mutants that were in his range, but soon enough Ryoma felt Dan out by the classroom building – cleaning up, probably. He made his way outside into the afternoon sun, shivering a little in the cool October breeze. He found Dan easily enough and approached him, waiting for him to look up. “Hey,” he said, “I gotta talk to you a minute.”

Dan was humming happily as he rummaged around in the mess. He, of course, had immediately gone to the classrooms when he had heard what they would be doing while the classrooms were in their wrecked state. Dan needed something to keep him busy with his seemingly endless energy. There wasn't much to do when classes weren't going on and the kids he played with were probably at their school now.

As he pulled out a piece of a desk, his eyes looked up to see Ryoma approaching. He waved with his gloved hands. "Echizen-kun, are you here to help clean up?" Dan asked with a smile. "Oh? You have to talk to me? Um...Okay...About what?" Dan stepped out of the wreckage and put the piece of the desk aside.

He would have to help clean up later, he thought grudgingly, remembering how Hanamura had bemusedly told him to synch Kirihara and “help with demolitions.” But he planned to put that off as long as possible, unlike this particular assignment. “Yeah,” he said, eyeing Dan – it really was strange, he’d only grown a few cm but he could tell, next to Dan. It wasn’t quite so obvious when he stood next to Niou – or anyone taller, really.

“I need your power,” he said slowly, shoving one hand into his pocket and taking another sip of Ponta. “Hanamura wants me to figure out what happened here. Says it wasn’t a natural earthquake. I need you for that.” He was pretty sure Dan would be more than willing to help – that was just the way he was, after all. And it wasn’t as though Dan would have to do much work at all – just be there, really.

Dan pulled the gardening gloves off his hands and shoved them into one of his pockets. "Oh, you need to synch with me?" That surprised Dan because generally his powers weren't regularly needed. Usually they could just go to a history book to find what they needed. "I'd be happy to help, but...It wasn't natural? Why would someone go around and make the earth shake like this then?" He seemed confused, but passed that thought away. "We'll need a rock!" Dan said as he looked down at the ground. "Rocks are really useful!"

“Hanamura said it wasn’t natural – otherwise I wouldn’t be looking into it. I dunno why. Guess that’s what she wants me to find out.” Ryoma blinked as Dan searched the ground. “A rock? Does that help you focus, then?” He had to admit, he really didn’t know how far along Dan was in his training – it might help a bit, since Ryoma would get all of Dan’s future potential (like he had last time) when he synched. Hopefully since he was intentionally doing it this time, things would be a bit more controllable.

“Oh – and… we’re gonna have to go somewhere else,” he said, watching Dan continue to search. “Can’t do it around here – too many other powers I’ll catch when I drop the shields. Know of anywhere we can go?” He was not about to synch five people at once just to help Hanamura out. No way.

"Oh, do you think there might be someone out there who can make the earth shake that wants us to get hurt? Or maybe that person doesn't know how to control their powers so maybe Hanamura-sensei wants to know who it is so that she can help him?" Dan bent down and picked up a rock that his hand could barely fit around.

"May~be." Dan giggled as he brushed the dirt away from the rock. "I'm not sure, but I saw it on TV once. There was this lady who used a hairbrush to find out who was haunting this house. Maybe it'll work!" He thought for barely a moment before coming up with a place. "The playground! It's really fun there and they just put in some new swings! Let's go there, Echizen-kun!"

“I guess there must be, or something,” Ryoma said – he wasn’t sure if the quake had been intentional or not, but he’d assumed it probably had been. He watched Dan pick up a huge chunk of rock and shrugged – if the kid wanted to carry that, then he was welcome to do so. “… The playground?” He blinked – but okay, fine, he guessed he could live with that. It’d be mostly younger kids there, and none of them were likely to have developed powers he would synch strongly.

“Yeah… that’s fine. Let’s go.” They set off in the direction of the park, passing through the school gates quickly and heading down the road. They arrived there soon enough – it wasn’t far – and Ryoma shrugged, tossing his empty Ponta can in the trash and heading for the swings. If Dan wanted to swing, that was fine – he could deal with sitting down to do this, anyway.

He clutched his rock tightly in his hands as he followed after Ryoma. Dan was happy that he was going to the playground. It had become a favorite spot to him since Ryuhana didn't seem to have one, which was a shame.

Dan quickly went over to the swings. He placed the rock on the ground and sat down the swing while clutching the chains holding the swing up tightly. "Let's see who can go higher, Echizen-kun!" He said, the thoughts of the mission being pushed behind. He was already pushing himself higher with his legs.

… Dan wanted to see who could go higher? This wasn’t a game – Ryoma sighed, sitting down and swinging back and forth a bit, not really making much effort. “Why don’t you try that and I’ll work on getting this overwith?” he asked, watching Dan swing higher and higher. He closed his eyes, feeling around the park for any other mutants. He sensed only one – one of the parents sitting on a bench near the sandbox. He was an extremely latent – just the barest hint of power; Ryoma figured it probably wasn’t anything to worry about, and took a deep breath, dropping the shields carefully.

He didn’t feel much when he synched with Dan – it wasn’t an active power, so nothing felt actively different. The parent on the bench was just an empath – the emotional states of everyone around him pressed in on his mind with just the tiniest of forces. He realized… he’d felt like this before. A lot – shit. He shook his head. That wasn’t important now – he’d think about what that meant later. Right now, he opened his eyes and turned to Dan. “So you just think about the time you want to see to focus on it, right?” It was hard to figure out the inner workings of something he could barely feel.

Dan felt the butterfly feeling his stomach as he made his descent towards the ground. The wind messed his hair up badly with the headband sliding lower every time. He slowed down to a stop in order to adjust it. "Oh! I almost forgot about your mission." Dan scolded himself wordlessly for being so ignorant.

"Hmm, you think about the time it happened including all the number dates and stuff, place, um and I think you should think about what you want to see. I've never done anything like this before so I'm not really sure. I guess you should try thinking about an earthquake guy?" Dan shrugged. He hadn't reached the point where he had to see things this accurate. "Think really hard and don't get distracted by the other things, okay?" That was an important lesson Dan had been taught. He knew it well since he had trouble focusing on only one thing for a long period of time.

“Hn. Okay.” Ryoma swung back and forth a little, letting the soothing motion help clear his mind. He kept his eyes open – though closing them hadn’t seemed to make much difference before – and instead let them fall out of focus until the world was fuzzy. Last night… last night around 8 o’clock… last night, October 22, 2005, 8pm, the Ryuhana campus… the classroom building. Earthquake – someone had caused this… who were they…

The world blurred further – he could start to hear sounds: voices talking, two of them, they sounded young, his age or a little older. Wait – so kids were responsible for this? They were probably from the Brotherhood, they –

“Ah, shit – ” Those thoughts alone were enough to snap him out of it – he shook his head, feeling dizzy, stopping the swing. “You’re right about no distractions. Damn.” He’d almost had it – he’d just have to try again.

Dan didn't start swinging again to watch Ryoma. He made sure not to make any noises at all. Even the smallest creaks made his attention wander. Dan felt confident that he'd have better focus when he got older. For now Dan was satisfied with getting things close to what he had in mind, but that was all.

"Oh, what'd you see? Was it close to what happened to Ryuhana?" Dan's voice was a whisper. "Keep on trying, Echizen-kun! Think really hard, okay?" He encouraged as he rocked back and forth on the swings.

“Not much,” Ryoma admitted, rubbing one temple. This was going to give him one hell of a headache, he could tell. “Heard something though – sounded like they were kids, maybe a few years older than us though. No one I recognized. Lemme try again.”

He took a few breaths, blinked a few times, and again tried defocusing his eyes, concentrating on day, time, and place… The sounds of the park filtered out – he let them, trying to be as passive and observer as possible, not letting his own thoughts get in the way, just letting the scene wash over him…

Slowly the park faded away – he was in the classroom building, right outside the music room. He heard voices down the hall – he turned to “look,” saw two boys, one with short black hair, one with longer, chin-length blue hair, walking down the hall practically wrapped around each other. "Their guitars are cooler than ours? That's not allowed. Ryuhana dorks should not be allowed to have cool guitars." He watched as the two boys entered the music room, “following” them in only to see the dark-haired one immediately press the other up against the wall, kissing him fiercely as the walls and floor began to tremble just the tiniest bit –

“What the hell?!” Ryoma was dizzier this time, having snapped out of a full vision – he gripped the chains of his swing trying to make sense of what was going on. So two kids had snuck in – and yes, they sounded like Brotherhood kids. But… making out? In the music room? It had been doing something

Dan felt somewhat relieved that he wasn't the one Hanamura asked. It looked like Ryoma was having a tough time trying to get it. He didn't like the fact that Ryoma had to go through this though. Headaches weren't very fun and medicine tasted weird even though it helped.

"What is it?" Dan frowned because he didn't know what was going on. "Tell me what happened, Echizen-kun." He sounded worried mainly because Ryoma was seeing something that he couldn't. "Ah...Are you alright, Echizen-kun? Maybe you should take a break for a moment or you might hurt yourself."

“M’fine,” Ryoma said, taking a few deep breaths. “S’just… weird. There’s two of ‘em – Brotherhood. They snuck onto campus.” He decided not to tell Dan about the kissing part – the kid probably wouldn’t get it. “Gonna try again.” He went through the same process: focus on the date, time, place. He found himself in the music room, and there were the two Brotherhood boys, making out, and the walls were starting to shake –

He couldn’t synch anyone in a vision – he didn’t know which one was doing it, though from the sound of things it must be the dark-haired one; the blue-haired one sounded like a telepath, talking about thoughts. Ryoma watched the two a moment more… really, he didn’t need to see this. It was like a bad movie, all they were doing was making out and rubbing against each other and it wasn’t anything he cared to watch. So what he chose to watch, instead, was the building coming down around them. Yeah – this was their fault. Great. They’d come in here just so they wouldn’t ruin their own school doing… this?

He took a breath and brought himself out of it, swaying a little as the vertigo crashed down on him one last time. Ugh… He clutched the chains again before he fell off the swing, staring at his feet. “Yeah. Got ‘em. We can head back now,” he offered weakly to Dan.

Dan got up from his swing and quickly came over next to Ryoma. He breathed a sigh of relief that Ryoma didn't break anything like his brain. "So who was it? Do they go to our school? Or, or that other school with the other kids?" He asked with his curiosity overwhelming him. "Oh, um are you alright?" He mentally kicked himself for thinking about the culprits behind the earthquake before Ryoma's wellbeing. "Uwa~ You're good, Echizen-kun! I'd never be able to get anything exactly like I want it."

“They’re definitely Brotherhood – don’t know names, but I know what they look like. That should be enough for Hanamura.” Ryoma slid off the swing, blinking a few times. “I’m fine, just a little dizzy.” He was definitely going to bed the second they got back and sleeping this off. Hanamura could wait until tomorrow for her explanation. “And you’ll be able to get it… just maybe not for a while. Can’t do anything you won’t be able to.” He started off slowly for the park entrance, hoping to get back to Ryuhana before sunset.

"Oh..." He pushed his headband back up since it had started to slide down again. Dan felt hopeful knowing that he'd be able to do something this useful someday...if he could ever concentrate. He followed after Ryoma while leaving the rock behind. It seems like they didn't need after all. The rock could live the rest of his life in the playground. It'd probably be really happier there anyway.
