Summary: Shinji can't sleep. Kippei wakes up, sort of.
Shinji turned over again for about the millionth time that night and sighed heavily, staring at the roof and listening to Kii purring right by his head. Silly blue cat, how come it could sleep so easily when Shinji was having trouble? He yawned and flopped over the side of his bed, trailing his fingers over the floor lazily. Finally, Shinji peeked over at Kippei, sound asleep in his big bed and Shinji sat up, watching him. Breath in, breath out, no dirty dreams....Shinji smiled faintly, petting Kii before slowly slipping out of bed and making his way over to the other bed. He gently pulled back the blankets and climbed in beside Kippei, just watching him sleep.
Kippei was, in general, not a light sleeper. He worked hard and played hard and tended to sleep with the justified soundness of well-earned rest, occasional nightmares notwithstanding. But living with Shinji had adjusted his sleeping patterns somewhat, leaving him on some level always aware of Shinji's presence, his quiet breathing across the room and random restless movements in his sleep. This meant that he often had vague, not quite lucid dreams of Shinji, as if his sleeping senses filtered into his subconscious and mixed with memories of the day. They were pleasant, if not well-remembered, comfortable impressions of Shinji being there. Now he shifted and turned, moving closer to the sense of Shinji's presence that had nothing to do with his powers or Shinji's, but just simply was.
Kippei turned, shifting closer and Shinji just watched, a faint, happy little smile on his lips. Kippei was so damn cute sometimes. Shinji liked the way he was resting on his side, the tilt of his head, the exposed throat, the way his hand rested just so near his face, the fingers lax. Shinji liked everything about Kippei. Once Kippei was settled again, Shinji tentatively reached out, shifting closer again until he could rest his hand in Kippei's upturned one, his fingertips gently stroking the insides of Kippei's fingers.
Even in his sleep, Kippei's fingers closed around Shinji's and held them fast--perhaps because the light touch tickled his hand and he wanted it to stop, but also because conscious or not, he knew it was Shinji, it must be Shinji. No one else ever touched him like that. Very few other people touched him at all, in fact, and a lot of that was just because he always kept his distance, kept everyone at arm's length by choice, and he had never thought he missed it. But he liked touching Shinji, even if it was just something as simple as that. He liked the way that Shinji just wanted to be held, often, and Kippei would never use a word like cuddling or admit that he enjoyed it (to anyone other than Shinji), but that was what it was. He vaguely wished, in this dream of sorts, that Shinji were a little closer, and reached out to find the rest of him, settling his hand on Shinji's waist. Yeah, he was here.
Shinji stared at his fingers, trapped, and frowned. If he wriggled to get them free Kippei might wake up and that would not be as fun...though Shinji wouldn't mind either. But sleepy Kippei was cute, and it was easier to listen to his thoughts and he was thinking about Shinji which made Shinji inordinately happy. Then he was reaching out and the warm hand on his waist made Shinji shiver and shift closer. Cute and hot in his sleep. Closer...Kippei wanted closer. Moving slowly, so that Kippei wouldn't take his hands away, Shinji shifted until he was pressed right up against Kippei, his free hand wriggling under Kippei's body to wrap around his back and play with Kippei's hair. "Mmm...I'm gonna sleep here, okay." He didn't expect an answer, so it wasnt really a question.
Kippei sighed and settled contentedly against Shinji, deciding rather vaguely that if it was a dream he might as well enjoy it. Nothing much could happen if he was asleep, and it was nice to imagine Shinji there, sleeping beside him. He muttered something indistinguishable, and wrapped his arm more securely around Shinji. Too bad they couldn't do this for real more often, but he didn't trust himself if it wasn't a dream. Too much potential for... things to happen, although at the moment even in the dream it seemed like they were just going to lay curled up here together and go to sleep. That was fine, too. Shinji right where he should be, warm and safe. It was a nice dream.
A dream? And they got to sleep together in the dream when they didnt really? Shinji smirked a little. Kippei would get one hell of a shock in the morning apparently. It was nice, having Kippei holding him, and Shinji didn't feel as restless as he had. Kippei didn't mind; he thought he liked it and that was good, because Shinji wondered sometimes if maybe Kippei didn't want other things to happen, since he avoided them so much, but Shinji knew that wasn't true whenever he remembered the way Kippei kissed him sometimes, the way they...made out. Now those were dream worthy thoughts! Shinji nuzzled happily against Kippei's shoulder with those thoughts floating in his head.
A stray thread of something was tugging at Kippei's consciousness, pulling him towards waking up, but he didn't really want to wake up right now, it wasn't time and this was better. He stretched a little, getting more comfortable as he settled back against Shinji and further into sleep, or so he thought. It seemed like this dream was getting a little more lucid than this kind of dream usually was, which was kind of nice since it meant he could think about it and it was more likely he would remember it later. Shinji nuzzling against him made warm liquid feelings run down his spine, and Kippei curled closer around him, reaching blindly to wrap his fingers in Shinji's hair and kissing the top of his head where it rested conveniently on his shoulder. Dreams were nice like that.
Barely restraining a laugh, Shinji shifted until he could see Kippei's face; see him sleeping despite the fact he could hear Kippei thinking in his head. "You're so damn cool," Shinji whispered, leaning forward far enough to kiss him gently, just a brief brush of lips before he settled so closely he could feel Kippei's breath on his face. When it came to Kippei, Shinji couldn't begin to explain what he felt; he just knew it was something new, and special and he never wanted to stop feeling it. The more he tried to find out how to do the things Kippei wanted to do, the more Shinji was sure he was in love, not that he would admit it...from everything he had read, usually if you told a guy you loved them you never got to see them again though Shinji thought that was weird since if Kippei ever told him that, Shinji would refuse to be in a different room as him.
That nagging bit of consciousness brushed Kippei's mind again, and he frowned, trying to ignore it, but the slight disturbance labeled itself in his mind as Shinji, and therefore something he should pay attention to. Nice as this dream was, if Shinji was awake or maybe having a bad dream, Kippei should wake up and do something about it. He disengaged himself with some reluctance, pulling away from the warmth slightly so that waking up would be less of a shock, but oddly, it seemed to still be warm. He cracked one eye open, meaning to look for Shinji across the room, and frowned a little more in puzzlement as he found Shinji very much closer than he had expected, right in front of him. Oh.
Well that was nice, too, it didn't really matter if he was kind of awake then. Shinji was still here. Did he say something? Kippei thought he remembered the sound of words, either in the dream or perhaps that was what had woken him, or both. He murmured a sleepy questioning sound as he pulled Shinji closer again, nuzzling his hair. Nice soft hair...it was nice having Shinji here. His eyes slid closed again with a quiet sigh.
Oops. He hadn't meant to wake Kippei up, but he was still cute and sleepy so that was okay. Shinji smiled at the funny sleepy questioning sound that escaped Kippei and he watched Kippei's eyes slide closed again, feeling warm and content. It was nice, having Kippei sleepy and ...cuddly. Shinji wondered what Kippei would say if Shinji pointed out how much he seemed to like cuddling. Pushing a little, Shinji managed to half sit up, supporting himself on an arm on Kippei's other side, closing himself around Kippei and leaning over so his hair draped lazily back and forward across Kippei's shoulder. "Mmmm....you have nice dreams. I wanted one too, so now I get yours."
Kippei opened one eye briefly and looked at him again, a rather wry expression. "Ah, s'that so?" he murmured, feeling too sleepy to answer properly. Nice dreams now, was it? Considering Shinji's usual reactions to his dreams, he supposed that was rather an improvement. Not that he disagreed, of course.
"Y'warm," he added, mumbling as he rubbed his face against Shinji's arm and tried to curl back around him, which was rather more difficult now that Shinji had moved. "C'm back here," he grumbled, tugging with lazy ineffectualness at Shinji's body, wanting it pressed close against him again; though he rather liked the way Shinji was leaning over him too, studying him as if he liked what he saw.
God, Shinji wanted a video camera, or just the ability to take a memory and play it over and over and over; anything to be able to see Kippei just like this, all the time, for all the rest of time. Shinji would be more than content with that, but he gave in and slide back down so he was once again tangled with Kippei, though he stayed raised on one elbow so he could look down at him still, on the sleepy dark eyes he caught a tiny glimpse of, at the relaxed set of his features. "You're warm too you know...warmer than Kii because Kii is a lot smaller, but Kii sleeps louder than you...they should come with warnings...'I purr like a train'...but I like it that he does that because I can still hear him, even from here, but when you're asleep and I'm in my bed I can't hear you, so its better to be here, where i can."
Kippei was really not up to sorting out what all Shinji was saying--something about the kitten and warm and if Shinji was saying he was like the cat again that was really kind of embarrassing, and he would have pretended to growl about it but he didn't have the energy.
"Mmph," he mumbled instead, which was neither agreement nor disagreement, since if he disagreed Shinji would probably just argue with him and that would be tiring. Besides, the last thing Shinji said was right--it was better to have him here, especially now that Shinji had slid back down to where Kippei could wrap around him properly, tangling arms and legs and feeling settled and balanced in a way that was like gravity, but not. It was just Shinji.
Mmph? Shinji just smiled, because he did think Kippei and Kii were alike, which was why he had named him Kii, be he wasn't silly enough to constantly remind Kippei that was what he thought. But now, when Kippei wanted to cuddle and was content to just be there, he was very like Kii. Settling against Kippei, enjoying the hot closeness of him drowsily, Shinji pressed his lips gently to the nearest piece of skin. "I can sleep here right?"
"Mmm..." Kippei should probably tell him no, he thought vaguely, but that would mean he'd have to move sooner or later to let Shinji get up and he couldn't go back to sleep right away, and he didn't feel like moving, even if the way Shinji kissed him like that made faint tingles ripple over his skin.
"Yeah," he muttered, figuring that it couldn't hurt this once as long as Shinji was already here. "J'st....b'have," he ordered sleepily, too groggy to remember that Shinji probably wouldn't know what he was doing if he did it, and thus it was a little hard for him to not do it in the first place. But since he was still half asleep it probably wouldn't matter much anyway, since Kippei was feeling too lazy to do much about it even if he did. The kissing was nice, but it was just mixing with the drowsiness in a pleasant buzz of additional warmth. However, he added a fairly unnecessary warning, just to make sure. "Don' do that." More of that. Things like that. Whatever.
Don't kiss him? That sort of thing? Shinji frowned and felt a little...bruised, but he knew Kippei hadn't meant it like that. They were meant to be asleep and Kippei worked really hard and deserved to get to. It was not his fault the person down the hall was still reading that book, or that the guy across the hall kept having seriously weird dreams that had to be drug induced. Shinji sighed, and kept his lips to himself, resigning himself to making do with warm cuddles, which really wasnt hard to resign ones self to. Still..."Kippei..." His asked quietly, tentatively, not even sure if Kippei was still half awake. "Can we sleep somewhere else tomorrow night?"
Kippei had been falling asleep again, but he frowned in confusion at the question and forced his eyes back open, blinking sleepily at Shinji. Somewhere else? What did that mean?
"Hmm?" he asked intelligently, because that was about as much as he could put into words right then. What was wrong with here, and where else would they sleep at anyway? He was very comfortable, himself, and the idea of sleeping somewhere else mystified him a great deal. He put it down to being too far asleep to figure it out, and asked bemusedly, "Like where?"
"Like the quiet room," Shinji mumbled, his words muffled against Kippei and the sheets. His own bed was at least made of the same stuff, and sure it was just over there, but even when he was in it, it only helped block out things a little. The quiet room was Dead. Silent. That was still something akin to miraculous to Shinji, but he'd only been in there once since he met Kippei. He hadnt needed to use it at first, because his power immediately turned off around Kippei. But he was getting used to him, and it was harder to let it go again and he kinda liked the idea of taking Kippei there, to his little place like paradise, even if it was just a blank room with a pile of blankets and stuff.
It took Kippei several minutes to figure out what he meant, during which he fell back to frowning with his eyes closed, a frown of concentration this time as he tried to think that through with a sleep fogged mind.
"You c'n sleep there?" he asked, puzzled. He hadn't known that it was meant for sleeping in, although he supposed that made sense. At least he thought it might, but he wasn't sure why at the moment. "Mmm, 'f you want to," he murmured, stroking a lazy hand down Shinji's back in a reassuring fashion. It didn't matter much to him, he supposed, as long as Shinji was there too. He was still quite lost as to the reason for this, though. "Why?"
Shinji rolled his eyes and damn near snorted when Kippei stroked his back, trying to reassure him without having any idea why. It was damn cute, in typical Kippei fashion. "Because, sleeping beauty, I dont like sleeping to the tune of dancing magic mushrooms in fushia and lime spotted dresses."
Kippei frowned again and blinked, and decided that probably would have made sense if he'd been awake. Maybe. He didn't feel like trying to figure it out at the moment.
"Mmmkay," he agreed drowsily. Whatever the reason, Shinji wanted to, so that was fine with him. Belatedly, part of Shinji's words came back to him and his frown deepened. "M'not sleeping beauty," he informed Shinji, as firmly as he could when half asleep. That he knew didn't make sense, at all. Shinji was probably just being silly, but it sounded weird and Kippei didn't like it. Maybe Shinji was sleeping beauty, but not him.
A wide grin broke across Shinji's face. They could sleep tomorrow night, in the nice white quiet room. Perfect. And Kippei was being a grump in his sleep; adorable. Shinji deliberately shifted his leg to tease Kippei, then smirked, leaning forward so his breath washed against Kippei's cheek. "I say you are...and I'm your prince come to wake you up with kisses...all night long." If he wasnt going to get any sleep he could at least spend the night annoying Kippei...waking him up just as he got to sleep. Mean yes, but Kippei was so damn cute it was irresistible. He leant forward the last little bit and kissed Kippei hard, sudden and deliberate.
There were several things about that which Kippei really wanted to object to, starting with the deliberate teasing after he'd already told Shinji to behave. This was not behaving, and Shinji knew it, and he would have said as much, but before his brain could catch up with this thought long enough to actually say so, Shinji was kissing him and that was distracting. Not that he minded, he was too out of it to remember at the moment that this probably fell under the same heading of not behaving--but it was still good and for the moment he was just enjoying it, though Shinji was putting rather more energy into it than any sane person should be capable of at this hour.
Smirking at the scattered thoughts running through Kippei's brain, Shinji finished off his rather awesome early...very early...morning snog, and went back to just snuggling his own personal sleeping beauty. "Kii is cute." And Kippei did not need to know he wasn't talking about that cat, though it was cute too.
If Kippei's brain hadn't been shorted out before, it certainly was now, and he only made a wordless sound of acknowledgement that might have been an agreement, or it might not. The words made little sense in any case, seeming to have nothing to do with anything, but they didn't sound like they required a coherent response, so Kippei pulled Shinji closer with sleepy strength and made sure he wasn't going anywhere. Now maybe he could go back to sleep.
