summary: Miyuki pounces on perceived weaknesses to win over a new recruit for the 'Hood.

Miyuki lingered at the door to check her watch again. She wasn't early — how often did that happen? — so Shiraishi should be out by now.

She knocked on the door, opening it as she did so. "Kura-ri~n," she singsonged as she leaned in, hanging from the doorframe.

Kajimoto blinked at the interruption, and looked up from the book he had metaphorically buried his nose in, though he didn't need to do that to know it was Miyuki.

"Shiraishi-san isn't here, Chitose-kun. Would you like me to leave a message for him?" he asked politely, marking the page he had been reading. The book was quite fascinating, detailing the events surrounding influential mutants in politics. He'd purchased it after the protest, but hadn't read very far yet.

Adopting a mild look of dismay at the 'news,' Miyuki released her hold on the door to walk in and fall onto Shiraishi's bed. "Well, where'd 'e go?" It was best to ask the right questions, she figured. From what her roommate had said, Kajimoto's views were unexpectedly to the left, but Miyuki didn't think he'd appreciate being played, either way.

"I'm not sure," Kajimoto replied with a shrug, setting his book down on the desk beside him. "He didn't say. You're welcome to wait around here if you like." He didn't know how he was going to entertain her if she did and Shiraishi was gone for awhile, but she would probably leave anyway to look for him if she wanted to.

Miyuki propped herself up on her elbows to look at Kajimoto, her eyes catching on the book as he displaced it. "I might just," she said, a hint of musing in her voice. "What'cha got there~?" It was safe to assume it was something geeky, but you didn't start conversations like this one out of nowhere.

"Ah, it's a book on mutants in politics...would you like to see it?" The book was blatantly biased in a pro-mutant fashion, but the fact only made it more enjoyable to read. Kajimoto wasn't quite sure exactly what Miyuki's political views were, but he had a sense of them from seeing her in the protest and talking to Sumiko.

"Yeah, give it here." Miyuki sat forward to take the book, took a moment to glance over the cover, then began flipping through it. It was the kind of thing she'd read, assuming she had time for reading that wasn't required. The text was geared in her direction, though, and she found herself lingering over a few passages before she remembered that this was, more or less, why she was there to begin with. She shut the book.

"Doesn' seem like the kinda thing you'd be into. Required reading?" she asked as she passed the book back to him.

Kajimoto shook his head, and set the book back on his desk. "Just something I picked up after the protest." He noticed that Miyuki had seemed interested in it, and reminded himself to lend her the book when he was done. "I've been interested in mutant rights since I figured out I was one...which was years ago." His parents' reaction to the protest footage had reminded him of why he hadn't actually done anything about said interest, but lately he'd found himself caring less and less about what they thought of him.

Sprawling back on Shiraishi's bed again, Miyuki gave a hum of interest. "Yeah? Nakamoto said y'sounded pretty pro-rights the other night. I figured she just meant in relation t'her." She rolled her eyes — she liked her roommate well enough, but the other girl's views didn't quite match up to Miyuki's. "Surprised me a little, t'be honest."

Kajimoto shook his head again, though a faint blush spread across his cheeks at the mention of Miyuki's roommate. "We actually discussed our political views after you left with Shiraishi-san, among other things. Why did it surprise you?" he asked, curious.

Miyuki shrugged. Carefully, she said, "Just... didn't strike me 's the type, s'all. Seems like some a' the kids around here interpret 'pro-mutant rights' as 'terrorists in trainin',' y'know? Kinda figured you'd be one a' those." She wanted to tread lightly here, but it was hard to do by her very nature.

"Hardly," Kajimoto replied, resisting the urge to snort. He knew that pro-mutant rights didn't necessarily mean pro-terrorism. "I'm sure some of those kids are just going off of their parents' views...my own parents aren't exactly pro-mutant rights either." Mostly they had allowed him to go to Ryuhana because they didn't want to deal with a freak in their house any more than he wanted to stay there, hiding away in his room with his books.

For a few seconds, she regarded him with scrunity, and then she laughed. "Guess I had ya' pinned a little wrong, then, yeah?" Miyuki sat forward with a grin. Regardless of whether this recruitment attempt was successful, she had to say she was glad to hear that. A little fight in a boy always made him more interesting. "Y'know, y'might be surprised at how many people agree with ya."

"Not too surprised....I did see quite a few people at that protest, including you. Do you know who organized it, by any chance?" He hadn't been able to find out and he didn't really expect Miyuki to know (or to necessarily want to tell him if she did), but he figured it was worth a shot.

"Heard rumours, I guess." Miyuki chuckled. She wasn't in any hurry to tell him everything without seeing his hand first. Sliding to the edge of the bed, she leaned back on her hands and stretched her legs out. "Why, y'gonna give 'em a pat on the back f'ya find 'em?"

Kajimoto shrugged. "I was simply curious...I knew groups like that existed, but I never really had the opportunity to get involved in something like that protest before. It felt...right, somehow. Like I was actually doing something important. I know it sounds odd, and I don't know what I would actually do if I knew...I doubt they would appreciate a stranger approaching them out of the blue and asking where he could sign up."

You're makin' it easy for me. Restraining laughter, Miyuki crossed one ankle over the other and tipped her head back to study the ceiling. "Y'might be surprised at that one." She left it at that for the moment, wondering if Kajimoto would pick it up.

The comment confused Kajimoto for a moment, before it dawned on him. "You do know, don't you? And...they wouldn't mind?" He could hardly believe his luck, and his mind was filled with questions. "...Are you part of them?" he asked, remembering that she had been handing out fliers.

Miyuki dropped her head to look at Kajimoto with a grin. "One question at a time, Señor." She sat forward again, almost conspiratorially. "I can introduce ya t'some people if y'want, yeah; they'll be glad t'have ya. Just do yourself a favour and don't talk too loud about it; you've seen the kinda attitude we get, right?" She dipped her head a bit to properly catch and hold his gaze, trying to keep her expression genuine.

"I have, and I won't say a word," Kajimoto promised, completely serious. Keeping secrets was easy when you didn't socialize much anyway. "So who exactly is 'we'?" He wondered if any other people he knew from Ryuhana were in the group as well. He suspected Shiraishi might be, as he had been handing out fliers as well.

"S'plenty of us t'count. You'll find out in time." Miyuki flashed him a smile, standing and stretching at once. "Kura an' I're goin' out t'night, but 'm not sure we're takin' ya with us just yet. When 'e gets back, let 'im know I gotcha~?" She ruffled Kajimoto's hair.

Kajimoto blushed again at the affectionate gesture...no one had ruffled his hair like that since he was a kid. He was about to reply when he realized something about what she had said.

"...He knew about this, didn't he?" It made sense, since Miyuki hadn't said anything further about wondering where Shiraishi was or when he would return. 'Let 'im know I gotcha' made it sound like Miyuki had only been here specifically to talk to him. He wasn't sure how he felt about being deceived like that, but he supposed he couldn't blame them for being secretive. They didn't know how he would react, after all.

"'Course 'e did," Miyuki laughed. "'E's prob'ly off doin' our Good Work as we speak, n'fact." She headed for the door, where she leaned for a moment, looking back at him. "Figured y'liked me better'n him, so I'd be better off talkin' to ya than he would, y'know?" Briefly, she wondered if Kajimoto would be ruffled at that, but it was too late now — as always, she spoke and then thought.

"I understand," Kajimoto replied, nodding. "And I don't really dislike him," he added honestly. They just...had clashing personalities, he supposed. He figured he would be getting to know him a lot better if he joined the...whatever the group was called. "Oh...would you mind telling Nakamoto-san I said hello?" he asked, a hint of hopefulness in his voice. He thought about inviting her over, but he didn't want to give her the wrong idea.

Looking slightly surprised, Miyuki straightened from the door to open it. "Sure, I'll tell 'er you said so." She was sure her roommate would find it 'cute,' somehow — Miyuki just thought it was weird. She made a mental note to bring it up to Shiraishi later; maybe their split during the double-date had more of an effect than intended?

Shaking her head, she stepped back through the door and flashed one more smile, winning and mischievous. "'M sure she'll be happy t'hear it~." It really was hard to resist teasing Kajimoto.

"Thank you," Kajimoto replied, trying to fight back another blush before it reached the surface. He didn't want to make it seem like more than it was, because it wasn't. He and Sumiko were just friends, and they were going to stay that way. "Thank you for the other part, too. I appreciate the opportunity," he added sincerely.

"Thanks for the support, Señor," Miyuki chuckled. "I'll be seein' y'around, then~." She turned and sidled down the hall, hands laced over her head.

That had gone just as well as expected, if not better. Miyuki was still a little surprised at the results, but the surprise was a pleasant one. With any luck, the other potential recruits would react similarly.

Yeah ... we know. ♥

Shira's first mistake was not being all buddy-buddy with Kaji from the get-go. All of that "I dislike my roommate quite a lot" wasn't helping him much....
