Summary: Fuji and Rin have a lunch at the roof and talk about things and come up with something interesting to keep themselves motivated. ♥?

Fuji had promised he'd bring pie.

He also said he'd made it himself, and that wasn't entirely true -- it was Bunta's creation, but to be fair, he had helped. So it wasn't entirely a lie, either.

The smoothies, on the other hand, were entirely his: he'd selected a healthy combination of strawberries, peaches, and mangoes, blended well with ice, and brought two servings with him to Ryuhana that afternoon. He really couldn't go wrong with those, regardless of what other strange combinations he liked. (Though to be honest, even Fuji had to admit that Inui's latest creation was on the ghastly side of awful -- that he could swallow it and maintain his pleasant exterior was all he needed to convince people that he actually liked the stuff. Which was fun.)

Fuji wasn't sure exactly where to meet Rin (not Hirakoba-kun and certainly not -sensei; the latter was a little ridiculous considering they were the same age and all), but he knew that the other boy had an office on campus. Perhaps he'd be there in the break between classes and training.

The weather was just too good to stay inside. And even with his recent level of frustration at everything and anything at all, Rin did decide to spend his break on the roof of the school building. Perhaps he was hoping it'd help. The sun, fresh air and possibility to think clearly.

It didn't, as it turned out after the first few moments, and the more he thought on the things bothering him, the worse he felt.

The blonde sighed, stretching on his back to watch the sky, as he waited. He left Fuji -- or any student needing to see him, actually -- a note where he'd be able to find him (and an apology), back in that little thing he dared to call an office. Yesterday, when he was meaning to answer something pressing came up and there was just no time. After it had been taken care of, Rin had no mind to do anything else, but curl up on the bed. Rare as it was, it did happen sometimes.

He could only hope Fuji wouldn't mind, but then thought that Fuji certainly wouldn't mind. The other just wasn't that kind of a person.

Rin smiled to himself, remembering all the times he spent like this during middle school and high school, skipping classes for no reason at all. Hmm, yes, certainly a better thing to think about right now.

There wasn't anyone in the office, but there was a note on the desk that said Rin could be found on the roof if anyone needed him. Ah, that was a good idea, Fuji thought, and a lovely way to spend such a nice day. Much better than staying inside a stuffy office.

He made his way to the roof, where it looked like Rin was napping -- or at least sunning himself in the warm spring air. "Hello?" Fuji greeted, tentative, not wanting to wake him up too harshly if he was sleeping. "I found your note."

One was most vulnerable when asleep, and for that reason only Rin never slept in a public place. Today was no exception and he actually heard the steps before Fuji appeared. For however long no one wouldn't force that inhibitor collar on him again, the blonde mutant was nearly impossible to startle.

He rouse only when Fuji spoke, though, smiling his usual smile and running a hand through the blonde locks. " 'm glad you did. Sorry for the inconvenience." He paused to sit properly, cross-legged and then patted the spot next to him, "Hope you don't mind?"

"Not at all," Fuji replied, and sat where Rin indicated. "I just hope everything's still cold, with as warm as it's been lately." He took the big cups of juice out of the bag he'd brought them in, along with pie slices in boxes and plastic forks. "You'll have to tell me if you like it or not. I've never baked for anyone with enhanced senses before."

At that, Rin had to laugh. "I can assure you that if it's good for a, well, let me say 'normal' person, then it'll be good for me too," with the only difference that if he wanted, he'd be able to make out and name all ingredients. But that was left unsaid, as the blonde didn't really feel it was important (or even interesting) enough. "I can already tell it smells wonderful," though, as he learned from incidents with Inui's creation, smell not always told everything. Even more so, smell could easily lie. And that's when Rin had to remind himself it was Fuji here, not Inui, and no, he certainly wouldn't pass out from whatever the other prepared.

"I won't poison you," Fuji promised. "Maybe some other people," he added with a grin. Niou was certainly at the top of that list of late; he was sure there were others there as well but none other so prominent. "But not you. I like you."

He tried the pie himself -- not bad, he thought, and neither was the juice. He might have to do this more often.

'I'm nearly impossible to poison,' was the retort Rin had on the tip of his tongue, but in the end he just shook his head, grinning wide. He did like Fuji as well, granted he liked many people (almost everyone he has ever met), but there was also trust involved in this case. Despite what many might have thought, the blonde could count the number of people he really trusted on one hand.

He took a bite of the pie and noted that yes, it was indeed a perfectly edible pie. In fact, it was a very delicious one. Rin didn't waste any time, after swallowing, to compliment Fuji on both -- the juice was also a nice blend of few flavours that felt smooth on the tongue and throat.

After another bite (and swallow) the blonde couldn't help but ask curiously, light brown eyes fixed on the other, "Why did you, ahh..." the question had been on his mind since the very start, but it seemed that he still couldn't voice it properly, "stick around? I mean, I haven't got you on the official list, or anything." He paused, then added quickly, " 's not a problem, 'm just curious."

Fuji hummed thoughtfully, piecing his response together carefully in his brain before answering. His standard responses were usually half-truths and misleading statements, but he wanted to -- needed to -- be honest here. "After my brother came back," he said. "I suppose it's as simple as wanting to keep an eye on him, but ... hmm. It may not just be that.

"He didn't have any control, and I couldn't teach him. Ryuhana could -- can -- is. And what else would I do with my days?" He shook his head and smiled, wry. "I suppose I'm admitting that I need a little help, too." And that could be taken one of two ways, he knew: help with his powers, as Ryuhana gave to its students; or help with his project. "I'm glad I could find it." His smile turned more genuine as he looked up at Rin.

Rin returned the smile, just as genuine, "And I'm glad I could help," he found it amazing that he was doing a decent job at this training-thing. Even though there were times when he was close to pulling his hair out from frustration -- he just wasn't suited to this kind of job, after all. Ryoga would do better at it, that was something Rin was sure of, especially after he managed to figure out and explain him how to retract these claws.

"Though I apologize in advance if I'm not able to help any more than that," he was still smiling, but more thoughtful now, "With that new glitch that came around."

"Actually," Fuji said, "that's a reason I'm glad that I'm here. It's not the sort of thing I could have figured out on my own." Granted, he never would have found out about the addition to his power if not for the training simulation, but then again -- he never would have found out about it, and wouldn't know what he was truly capable of. "I've done a lot of training on my own," he elaborated. "Most of what I knew when I was here the first time 'round was what I had taught myself. But ... there's more to it, isn't there?"

It was odd how comfortable Fuji was talking about this -- even admitting, openly, that he had more to learn and an unreached potential. But he knew that Rin wouldn't judge him. It was safe, in a way; in a way that he couldn't tell Yuuta or Bunta because he needed them to believe that he was still strong. It was kind of nice.

Rin just smiled -- fate was a nasty bitch, he always thought, and Fuji's power most probably needed a trigger. One which fate decided to give him here, at Ryuhana, and not outside. It could have happened anywhere. But these thoughts were unnecessary, so Rin pushed them aside. Not worth keeping, they'd be quickly forgotten.

Absently, he twirled a strand of hair falling onto his shoulder, before speaking up, "Of course there is," then Rin paused, suddenly at loss of what to say -- a rare situation normally, but recently, when his thoughts kept straying from the matters at hand, more often. He let out a short laugh and finally managed to find his voice again, " 's what makes life interesting, right? Grasp it and squeeze out of it as much as possible." His smile turned a little more challenging, but not less... whatever it was -- genuine? friendly? "I'd like to see how far you can go."

"That sounds like a challenge," Fuji said. "I think I might be able to take you up on that." He'd never thought that he'd have any drive to move forward, whether with his power or with his life ... but things were changing, and he liked the idea. He liked it a lot. Things were interesting again, and Fuji was quick to ascribe the change to Rin -- sort of like when he first met Bunta. "Are you suggesting we spar, or something a little less mundane?"

Spar? No, spar wouldn't exactly work for them. It'd be a little strange, if not worse, or that's what Rin thought. Besides, with what he wanted Fuji to achieve, it needed to be something long-lasting. Longer than a mere spar. The idea that was forming in his mind would also made him feel the thrill of getting better, or striving to surpass his limits. More interesting, more exciting and certainly good for the both of them.

Rin let his smile widen, amusement dancing in the golden irises, "How about a competition of sorts? A competition of challenges?" He gestured with one hand, "Like, I challenge you to hm, teleport this," he pointed to the plastic forks and other things they'd have to dispose of, before leaving, "to the trash can... there?" This time his finger was pointing in the direction of the door, where the bin was located, "You do this, or have some time to prepare before, and then it's your turn and for example you challenge me to oh~," the blonde pointed to the fence surrounding the roof, "climb this and walk from that end to the other," his finger moved along the longest side of the building. "If either of us fails, or refuses," he shrugged, it could happen, "Then... we should have some sort of a punishment, but nothing comes to my mind just yet." Well then, Rin lay it out as simply as he could, and all he had left to do is hope Fuji would find it just as interesting as he did. "So, what do you say~?"

Fuji liked the idea. It was far more interesting than a simple spar. Not only would it keep his interest, but it would push him farther than an immediate contest -- it'd challenge him to think not only of how to solve his own problems, but how to stay a step ahead of his competition. And it was always easier to practice on a friend, just in case he stumbled in his steps. And besides that, it put them more in the position of peers -- friends -- than teacher and student. (Fuji thought it silly that such roles were assigned to them, anyway; weren't most roles arbitrary to begin with?)

"I say we should try this," he said. "I think it could be beneficial to both of us." He let his smile show his approval, a genuine one at that. "Let's have some time to think about our first challenge, and post them in a day or so?" Fuji suggested. He knew he wanted to start small, but would need time to determine what Rin might consider "small".

Oh goodie, after all Rin did need a bit of time to figure out what would be the best point to start. Nothing too big, nothing too small, the thing was to fit right there, in the middle. He grinned, "Sounds like a deal." He could feel the excitement already settling in. Additional advantage -- it'd take his mind off ... certain matters, which he didn't need, or even... want. That last thought was startling to come to, but it was true. Excluding the recent anxieties of whatever other changes happened in Ryoga, Rin was perfectly content to continue his-- their lives as they were now. Things would happen when they were to happen, no need in rushing things. Contentment and excitement, at once, what else could he ask for? Family, a gloomy thought appeared, but it was quashed right away.

"This should be fun~," he laughed out loud, stretching his arms above his head, "Though," a playful pout took over the blonde's expression, index finger tapping on his lips thoughtfully, "We still have to set a punishment~." He'd leave that up to Fuji, and pray the other wouldn't come up with something too... drastic.

Fuji did think briefly that a suitable punishment for Rin might be to subject him to one of Inui-sensei's recipes again, but decided against it -- there was punishment, and then there was cruelty, and for someone with enhanced senses, that would likely be the latter. "Should it be something that's the same for both of us?" he asked. For the sake of consistency, it was a good idea, but there was no need for it to be that way ....

Rin was almost 100% certain that he could push himself through anything and everything at all (if the punishment was something he'd really despise doing), the thing was -- and he was perfectly aware of that -- sometimes he lacked common sense. At times like these, he needed to be slapped. Hard. And Ryoga did a good job at that, but... he was digressing again. He was spacing out on people, that was no good and had to stop, "Yes, same for both of us~," Rin said with a nod, forcing his thoughts back on track.

All the more reason that Inui's juices wouldn't be appropriate, Fuji decided, and continued to think. "Perhaps we should let someone else decide," he suggested. "This sounds like the sort of thing that Niou-san might enjoy." He certainly knew that he didn't want to be subjected to anything that Niou had to offer, and he doubted that Rin would, either. "So if either of us lose ... we have to ask him." It was perhaps a lame suggestion, as it was vague, but it was better than nothing.

Niou, huh? The guy certainly specialized in making people's lives miserable, but Rin was also sure he... couldn't be worse than Inui's drinks. But then again, Niou might decide that a suitable punishment was drinking whatever Inui prepares -- and that wasn't good. All in all, he decided to agree to that, thinking that it'd be also a good exercise for him to use the coherent part of his brain more often than the hotheaded one.

Though then, something else caught his attention, and he couldn't help the slightly amused tone of his voice, "You don't seem very fond of Niou, eh?"

Fond was not the first word Fuji would use to describe his feelings on Niou, but he didn't hate him, either. Not exactly. Or maybe he did. "Possibly," he replied. "I don't like him, but I trust him." And considering Fuji could count the number of people he trusted on one hand, that was saying quite a lot. "What do you think of him?"

Rin clicked his tongue at the question being directed right back at him. Honesty was expected, and he didn't like to answer such questions honestly. His opinions were pretty mellow, he liked the same almost everyone around, unless someone stood out -- in a positive or negative light. "I like him," he said simply, then elaborated, "In this far-acquaintance kind of way, I guess, but I don't know him well enough to trust him." A partner in crime for pranks, or an amusing partner for vague and random discussions, nothing more, nothing less.

"He'll probably be willing to help us out, then," Fuji decided. It didn't matter if Niou's 'punishments' would likely be more abhorrent to Fuji; he was prepared to accept that Niou had it in for him. Oddly enough, that in and of itself was appealing. "We'll start on Monday?"

Rin chuckled, "Yes, I'm sure he'll find the opportunity to torture us a bit very appealing." And he was meaning to elaborate, but the alarm in his mobile rang, indicating the end of the lunch break was nearing. And it was time for them to get moving. Aww, pity. In the end the blonde said with a wink, "Yes, should be able to come up with something for you until then." Then he stretched again, properly and thoroughly this time, "We should be heading back now, though."

Fuji nodded, and gathered the trash from their sort-of lunch. He'd be able to throw it away once safely off the roof. "Then I'll see you in class, sensei," he joked, with a smile of his own.

"Oy," Rin laughed, walking alongside the other boy. His hand shot up and gently twapped him over the head, and he joked right back, "Be nice, or I'll be giving you additional homework."

Fuji laughed despite the thwap. "I might want it, if it means I get to stay after class," he said, smile turning coy. He might've been pushing the envelope with the boundary of how friendly he could get with Rin, but testing never hurt -- he could always claim he was kidding, if that's what Rin believed it was. "But yes -- soon," he agreed, and waved goodbye before parting ways.
