Summary: After destroying the laboratories conducting research and modifying mutant children into Warpies Yanagi runs into a few problems before he can return to Japan.
And so, the two travelled all the way from Japan to southern Africa in order to combat the uprising of the new Warpy faction. The fight was bloody and dangerous. They were recognized, notably for the computer packs on their backs, Renji's mutant abilty and Inui's cybernetic body. The doctor should have seen it coming, but he couldn't. Dead bodies already lay in their wake. The mutants, already modified were carefully shut down, disconnected from their units and whether or not they stayed and fought was their own descision.
Inui didn't care. He was out for blood.
The doctor had collapsed to the ground, blood spurting from his neck as Inui stood, knife raised in the air, blood dripping down his hand, on his clothes, upon the ground. Silence had fallen. The same sort of silence that fell after their first time the warpies rose up against their 'masters'. The younger mutants ran for it, escaping, some traumatized, some grateful, some inspired and burning with hatred.
And some mutants, some of the ones that ran for it, were kidnapped. They were kidnapped by the same person that kidnapped Inui, several hours later. He was simply an old man, dressed like a doctor, with a long beard and half moon glasses.
Inui had disappeared from Renji's side once again, just as he had done the first time they gone through a terrible thing like this.
Renji’s ability allowed him some distance from the fight. He hadn’t been by Sadaharu’s side when the other mutant had been taken. To Renji it was just like the first time. Last time he’d been abandoned in his birth country that might as well had been a strange land to him, this time he was once again abandoned in a familiar place, surrounded by dead bodies. This time he wasn’t blind and confused though, he was going to find Sadaharu.
He wiped his hands on his shirt, feeling dirty and heavy. Renji detested the information gathering part of his ability but it would be stupid to ignore the advantage such information gave him. He was impatient, the longer he stayed behind the more likely it would be that Sadaharu would leave without him. And he wasn’t going to stand for it a second time. Sadaharu was the one that had dragged him back into this, and though he was willing there was a limit to what he would allow.
Inui didn't know what to expect, but he was compelled to listen to this man, hypnotized by his kind words, kind face, and he did not take easily to kindness, at least not by a man wearing a white lab coat and half moon glasses. This old man was different. He felt relaxed... calm....
The last he remembered was being taken back to a warm, cozy room... and then everything went black.
Destroying all the research material and labs Renji watched as the building collapsed onto itself. He was surprised Sadaharu hadn’t at least stayed to finish this off but with business taken care of Renji sent and searched for his companion.
He searched for Sadaharu for several days, there was no sign that he might have left for Japan without him and equally no clue to where he might be currently. There was just the slightest possibility that Sadaharu might be in some sort of danger and the worried gnawed at Renji constantly.
Inui was deposited someplace near the ruins of the research laboratories, and he began to wander about, just slightly lost, as though he were looking desperately for something. He couldn't go back to japan yet. Not yet. Not without it. It wouldn't be right.
Renji dropped the paper he’d just purchased. He could have sworn that he just saw Sadaharu. Running around a corner he looked again. He’d run out of places to search for Sadaharu yesterday but that didn’t mean he’d given up. “Sadaharu?” he tried calling, though there was no guarantee that the other would hear him or if he did hear, that he would answer.
Inui perked, hearing his name, hearing the voice. He whirled around. "Renji!" he exclaimed, running to his side, wrapping his arms around him, hugging him happily, eagerly. "I've been looking everywhere for you!"
That was the last thing Renji would have expected to happen. One moment he was calling out for Sadaharu the next minute he had an armful of Sadaharu. It was the kind of thing acid trips were made of, or so he’d gathered from research. “You’ve been looking for me?” Renji repeated in a kind of disbelieving daze. “Where have you been, Sadaharu?”
"In the most fantastic place," Inui replied, before pausing and correcting himself, "well, to be honest, I'm not so sure. I think I fell asleep for a long time, and I had the most wonderful dreams but you weren't there when I woke up! But you're here now, and that's all that matters!"
Renji wasn’t quite sure how to handle this. It sounded like Sadaharu had been drugged, was still drugged, or had something done to him to make him this…chirpy. But they were in the streets and that wasn’t really a place to talk, “Let’s go back to our room and talk about this…”
"Ha? Okay!" Inui reluctantly let go of Renji, but not before taking his hand, just as they had used to do in their youth. "But I don't know what there is to talk about...."
Sadaharu had never taken Renji’s hand at his own accord. There was a lot to talk about. “I’m just a little worried,” Renji explained gently, not sure how to deal with this new Sadaharu. He squeezed the other teen’s hand lightly as if afraid he’d disappear again.
"I do hope the others are alright," Inui commented as they walked, squeezing Renji's hand in return. "I'm sure they'll be alright...."
They made it back to the room they’d rented all right, other than Renji being thoroughly disoriented by Sadaharu’s behaviour. He sat down on the bed that he had been sleeping on and looked at the other mutant for a long moment. “You said you…fell asleep? What happened before that, Sadaharu?”
"Before that? This kindly old man found me and said he'd take good care of me, and fix me, and put me the way I should be," Inui said, still ever chirpy, ever excited.
“Fix you?” Renji repeated in a disbelieving voice. This was Sadaharu “fixed?” It made sense but he had trouble believing it. Did that mean this was how Sadaharu was going to be from now on, it just didn’t seem natural, didn’t sit well with Renji.
"Yeah, fix me! He said he could correct all the damages that had been set upon me by those fucking assholes that made us what we were in the first place. I've never felt so free, so clear, so... happy...! In my entire life!" Inui was smiling, looking infinitely more cheerful than he should.
“Happy…?” Renji wasn’t sure. Was this right? Was this really how Sadaharu should be. Certainly Sadaharu wouldn’t fault him for worrying, he just wanted to make sure. “Sadaharu, do you want to shut down and unplug for a little bit? I just want to make sure you’re all right.”
"Wh-what? Well, if you say so. I think I'm fantastic, I've never felt so--" Inui trailed off and turned around. "Okay, you can do it."
“Thank you,” Renji murmured softly, going through the shut down procedures readily. He listened to the computer as it clicked softly and turned off before unplugging the wires from Sadaharu.
Inui's head fell forward as he felt the power disconnect from his body, and he fell into the habitual slumber.
Shaking the other teen gently Renji tried to rouse the other from his sleep. “Sadaharu,” he called gently, wondering what it would be like when Sadaharu woke up.
Inui's eyes fluttered open, white as ever. He blinked at Renji, taking a moment for his vision to settle. He smiled at Renji and wrapped his arms around him again. "Morning," he chirped.
He had fully expected Sadaharu to fall into the slightly cool personality that he usually had when unplugged. Renji automatically returned the embrace though he was dazed and confused, so…this was Sadaharu? “Morning. How do you feel?”
"A little tired," he commented, still hugging Renji. "And... a little sore. Ugh... my head hurts....." he sounded a little more bitter this time and pulled away from Renji rather quickly.
Renji let Sadaharu pull away, dropping his arms. “Sadaharu?”
".... ugh..." Inui covered his head with his hands, rubbing at it with a rather sour expression on his face.
Renji put a cautious hand on Sadaharu’s shoulder, worried.
"Ugh... don't touch me," Inui grumbled, pulling away with a frown.
…well, this was the Sadaharu Renji knew and loved. “Do you want some water or something?” Renji pulled his hand away, not wanting to make this more difficult for Sadaharu.
Inui shook his head and leaned back against Renji with a sigh. "Sorry... I didn't mean to snap at you like that... I just... my head hurts..."
“It’s okay.” Renji assured, he was long since used to being snapped at more than occasionally by Sadaharu. “Do you think it’s because…you were ‘fixed?’” he asked though Renji was almost certain that was the cause.
"No, that can't be it. My head usually hurts when I'm disconnected from my computer..." Inui confessed, cheeks turning red.
“Oh…I’m sorry. Your behaviour was worrying me,” Renji explained, making a note in his mind that disconnecting had that effect on Sadaharu.
"I don't mean to worry you!" Inui exclaimed, turning around to hug him. "It's alright. Don't worry."
Renji was surprised by the sudden hug, he really wasn’t sure what to think. The person who had fixed Sadaharu had done something very weird to him.
Inui was resting his head on Renji's shoulder as he continued to hug him, refusing to let go. He was smiling slightly. "But I'm glad you're the one who's there when I wake up... like that christmas we spent together. You're always by myside. Renji, I love you."
“Sadaharu?” Renji murmured in a small voice. He wasn’t sure how to deal with this, wasn’t sure what was wrong with Sadaharu.
"Yes?" Inui looked up, blinking at Renji.
“This isn’t right, this isn’t you.” Renji pushed the other teen away gently, something he didn’t think he’d ever do.
"Of course not," Inui said, smiling. "All my life I'd been inflicted by the weight of the computer programming, the programming that got into my internal functions and made me out to be much more angry, and much less emotive than I should be. Than I deserve to be. But the old man... I feel so much more comfortable."
“…You do?” Renji didn’t know what to believe. That wouldn’t explain why Sadaharu had gone back to…somewhat close to normal a few moments ago. “You want to stay this way?”
"I've never felt so good, or so happy..." Inui said in a quiet voice, cheeks flushed.
Renji hesitated, reaching to put a light hand on Sadaharu’s shoulder. “If you’re happy…then that’s all that matters.”
Inui smiled and wrapped his arms around Renji again, hugging him happily. "Aren't... you happy for me too?"
He ignored the nagging feeling in his mind that kept telling him this was way off. “I’m happy for you,” he replied, returning the embrace.
"And.. aren't you happy that I can finally confess my feelings for you too?"
“…Your feelings…for me?” Renji pulled back to look at Sadaharu like he didn’t understand. He didn’t.
".... I love you...!" Inui repeated, hugging Renji again for... what seemed to be the umpteenth time.
“…You love…me?” He’d never even bothered to imagine Sadaharu ever telling him that he loved him. It just wasn’t something that was going to happen but it was happening. In the completely wrong way.
"I love you!" Inui repeated, kissing Renji on the cheek, kissing him on the lips, all soft, loving kisses.
Renji accepted the kisses numbly, he couldn’t respond, didn’t know how to. This was so far out of his calculations.
Inui paused and pulled away slightly, looking at Renji, blinking. "What's wrong?" he asked, concerned, worried.
“I just…never expected this,” Renji tried to give Sadaharu a small smile but knew it came out flat. “This is so strange.”
Inui's smile vanished and the look he expressed was something of disappointment. He sighed slightly and pulled away from Renji. "I'm sorry...."
“No! Just… I feel like I’m taking advantage of you,” he tried to explain. He couldn’t see Sadaharu like that. “Sadaharu…I love you too, no matter how you are.”
Inui looked away slightly. This wasn't right at all. Renji didn't love him like this. Renji loved... the him that he hated. The dark, evil, brooding, likes to kill, hates other kind of Inui. But he didn't want to go back to that! He was finally free! "... Renji...."
Renji shifted close to Sadaharu again, leaning in to press a light kiss to the other’s lips. “I love you. This is just…sudden.” Very, and he was still uncertain but he could never say that he didn’t love Sadaharu.
"I want to stay like this," Inui said quickly. "I want to stay like this... and go back to Japan with you... and be by your side... and live with you... If not forever... at least for a little while."
“All right,” Renji agreed easily, this was what he’d always wished for wasn’t it? “We can do that.”
Inui smiled again, and kissed Renji again, and hugged him. "I'm so happy."
Renji rested his head against Sadaharu’s shoulder, feeling oddly tired. “Me too.”
Inui hugged Renji gently. "Oh, and I purchased tickets for our trip back to Japan. We'll be leaving tomorrow... if that's alright with you, of course."
“Tomorrow is fine,” Renji agreed though he was thinking about that old man that had “fixed” Sadaharu. He wanted to find that man and find out exactly what he’d done to the other mutant.
Inui slumped over slightly. "I... feel tired," he said in a low voice, body growing heavy. "I think... I should rest..." he was muttering now. "Maybe a nice... nap...."
“Rest,” Renji urged gently, pulling away from Sadaharu. He could have some time alone to think about this strange turn of events.
Inui curled up on the bed, resting quietly, sleeping, eyes closed. He would have good dreams...
