Summary: After finding Jiroh's body (log forthcoming~!), Ryoma finds Niou and shows off his newest party trick.

(wherein italisized things inside the **s will hencetoforth denote telepathic speech, yays!)

Now that Jiroh's body was… taken care of, at least in some sense of the word, there was one more thing that required dealing with before Ryoma was willing to go back to Ryuhana. And that was… why the hell was Niou here, at this hour of the day? It made sense that he'd likely been here all night, since Ryoma had spent the night in the kitchen, but he would at least like some minor explanation before heading back. He didn't care what Niou did, for the most part – he had his own life, after all – but this was supposedly "enemy territory" and deserved at least a little looking into.

Closing his eyes for a moment, he concentrated on his feeling of "Niou." He was pretty close by, actually – near enough that Ryoma could tell he was close, at least – and he set off in the direction of the feeling, waving to Jiroh to stay put (and possibly out of sight) until he returned.

He found Niou leaning against the side of what looked like a gymnasium, catching the just-barely-first rays of morning sunlight. It wasn't a bad idea – it was definitely chilly outside this early, and he’d given his coat to Jiroh. "Hey," he said, approaching the tall mutant slowly, head cocked inquisitively. "What're you doing here? You been here all night?"

Niou blinked, turning slowly at the voice. Either he was losing touch, the ground was soft, or Ryoma really hadn’t made any noise in that approach. He heard everything in trance mode, though most things bypassed his brain. Oh, right. Option four: his brain had been temporarily out of commission. Most likely <3

“Ryo-chan,” he grinned lopsidedly. “Small surprise to see you here.” For Jirou, I guess. He wondered vaguely if Hanamura’d commissioned the task, or if the little ghost himself’d pestered it done.

Beckoning Ryoma over – the dawn was really pretty when you caught it relaxed – he nodded in reply: “Since Monday evening. Where’ve you been?” It was unusual that Ryoma hadn’t asked or answered re: journal things earlier than this.

"The kitchen table," Ryoma replied, still not at all happy that he'd apparently spent the past twelve or so hours dead to the world. (That seemed to happen a lot, really, and it was not something he enjoyed in the least.) Walking the rest of the way to where Niou stood, he offered the rest of the explanation. "Jiroh was stalking me when I woke up, asked me to help him find his body 'cause it was missing. Said Yagyuu took it," he said distastefully – that hadn't gotten Yagyuu any points at all in Ryoma's book. "Synched him and tracked it here. Couldn't exactly miss the fact that you were here too." Or a few other people, really – he'd synched two Brotherhood mutants before, and he could tell their general direction from here as well.

He leaned back, shoulders against the cold brick, watching the yellow sunlight grow slowly stronger. "You here on official business?" He asked, glancing up at the other – he had no idea what Hanamura was up to these days, sending people to do things left and right. "Or just on vacation?"

…he ate the ice-cream, was Niou’s first thought. His second was telling himself not to laugh (though a small grin made it through <3). His third: …Yagyuu took it? Technically speaking, Yagyuu hadn’t taken it, and Niou hadn’t brought it here, which was great, really <3

But: “It’s not a mission, just something different,” he said instead, reaching out to ruffle Ryoma’s hair. “Hope you haven’t got a crick in your neck…”

"Mm, okay," Ryoma hummed. "And I do, but it'll go away." He considered what 'something different' might entail. It would be nice to know if he was going to be roommate-less for a few days or a few weeks. Though he much preferred the former.

"You staying long, then…? Or just a coupla days. You might get maimed or something, if you stay too long – think some of these idiots were probably responsible for Halloween," he said flatly – really, something like that was more than uncalled for. It was just plain stupid. In fact, it was beyond stupid. And he didn't much like the thought of what some of them likely wouldn't hesitate to do to anyone who felt differently. Not that he at all doubted that Niou could take quite good care of himself, but there were many Brotherhood mutants and one Niou. Not such great odds, if things got ugly.

Shifting over to lean on the wall behind Ryoma, Niou started up a gentle massage on the other’s neck and shoulders. “Probably just a few more days,” he said, tone turning slightly sour: “I’m pretty sure Halloween can be blamed on one, and he’d be a fucktard no matter where he went.”

…which led to another point: “Do me a favour and make sure Tai-kun isn’t disintegrating, yeah?” He didn’t think the kid would be; he was made of tougher stuff than he looked like – given his powers, it was more or less granted – but… all the same, it could help. Maybe.

"Mmm," Ryoma hummed, this time in approval, closing his eyes a moment. "S'fine then, but don't get killed, still." He fell silent, then smirked (though Niou couldn't see it from behind him, and maybe just as well). He'd had something he'd been meaning to show the other last night – obviously it hadn't happened, but now was as good a time as any. Why wait?

**And yeah, I guess I can check in on Dan if you want** he said.

The truth was, he'd been able to use telepathic speech since he'd first synched Hanamura, but he'd never much of it, and for a long while hadn't even really realized he could do it. But now that she was nearly through teaching him the intricacies of her power, for lack of any other progress to be made with his own, he'd decided that as long as he had to stay synched to the witch, he was going to use it to his advantage. And this might definitely have some advantages.

Niou blinked, hands pausing a moment. “Was that you?” he asked. It had definitely sounded like Ryoma, but… clearer, missing the slight soundwarp that came with vocalisation – and hearing from behind. Synched to Hanamura as the boy was 24/7, it figured he’d be able to pull off something like this, but – **Can you hear me if I don’t talk back?**

Ryoma snickered. "It was," he said out loud. **And I can... kinda** he said, unable to keep the amused smirk from his lips (or his mental voice) even as he stopped laughing. Niou's thoughts sounded... very far away, and a little like they'd come through a bad telephone connection. He'd expected that, though - Hanamura had said he'd be able to speak just fine with other telepaths, but that his ability to hear anyone else telepathically relied on whether or not he was "listening." The only reason he'd heard Niou at all was because he was listening for it right now - he was still shielded and wouldn't pick up just any stray thoughts.

"Doesn't work as well 'cause you're not a telepath - you don't know how to focus it," he chided. "Hanamura says I could make a link so I could talk normally with non-telepaths... same kinda thing she has with me so I can synch her from wherever." He paused a moment, leaning back into the hands on his shoulders a bit. **Wouldn't do that without asking, though** It wasn't really an invasion of privacy - the rapport would be designed only so Niou could talk to him telepathically without being a telepath and Ryoma wouldn't have to "listen" so hard, and it wasn't like any stray thoughts would come through. But still. Doing so unasked would be an abuse of power that was just plain stupid.

“What would it take?” Niou asked. “Go ahead, if your brain won’t die or anything…” He knew more or less how telepaths worked – that they wouldn’t pick up just anything – and there wasn’t really anything in Frequently Thought Thoughts that needed to be guarded over besides.

Not to mention there was something he suspected about his own power that would make a connection like this rather useful. He hadn’t properly tried it yet – full phases were still hard to hold at his current level, but he figured it was the same as breathing – if he was intangible, he shouldn’t be able to move the air. And speech was predominantly a pulmonic egressive airstream mechanism, after all. Hell, yeah, big words <3

**I don’t think I can talk intangibly anyway…**

Hm – that was a good point, now that Ryoma thought about it. Just plain breathing during a full phase was pretty improbable, let alone speaking. "You gotta point," he agreed, closing his eyes a moment. **Won't kill my brain – just takes some effort to get it up and running. Shouldn't feel much**

He took a few breaths, trying to clear his mind. Hanamura had told him the basics, and he could do the rest on instinct – and probably could have even if she hadn't told him how. It wasn't difficult, really, though it did take some concentration. He didn't dare drop his shields, so he did the next best thing: he'd been working on it in training recently anyway, so he slowly inched the shields out until they encompassed both himself and Niou. He felt his breathing and pulse slow, but he was so used to synching Niou by now that it hardly even registered. That done, he stopped for another breather before diving in to create the link.

It was a weird feeling, intentionally sending the telepathy out until it had rooted firmly in Niou… but it worked just fine. He connected the power with fairly little difficulty, and pulled the line between the two of them as thin as he could, feeding it off his own (well, his own by way of Hanamura) telepathic power. If his figuring was right, they'd be able to talk to each other – send words and feelings, and the other should only pick up things intentionally sent. Private thoughts and feelings would still be safe.

Niou just waited, knowing better than to disturb, and tried to keep his brain as still as he could without trancing. He had no idea where or why his focus went when he did that, but it could be troublesome if Ryoma didn’t have anything to link to

It wasn’t so hard. The kid’s head glowing pink was enough to keep him faintly amused for the five minutes it took.

**Done** Ryoma said as he slowly shrunk his shields back around himself, taking another set of deep breaths as his physiology slowly returned to normal. He opened his eyes and turned around, looking up at the other and grinning. It definitely seemed like it had worked on this end – his mutant sense of "Niou" was augmented by the telepathic link now in the back of his mind. **Try now? Distance shouldn't matter either – s'good anywhere, as far as I can tell**

Yeah, that felt about right, Niou chuckled. There was a little back corner in his brain with ‘Ryoma’ written on it now. Leaning down, he nipped lightly at the side of his teddycat’s neck (– yeah, Jirou could kiss his ass –), and sucked on the spot for a while. **Is that so~?**

Pulling back, there was a slight smirk on his face. “Handy.”

**Mm-hmm~** Ryoma purred, reaching up to scratch Niou's scalp lightly a moment. "Like I said, should work anywhere. Works all the time, too, 'till I undo it." He gave Niou's jaw a quick lick and then stepped back, indicating the lawn behind them with a tilt of his head. "Should get going… Jiroh's still wet and he'll prolly get lost if I don't walk him back to school." To say the least. The walk back would be very interesting, he was sure. Given the way the walk here had been… **Don't die, or I'll definitely know**

**I always play it safe** Niou grinned. And, well – he’d see Ryoma back to the Brotherhood gates, but couldn’t imagine encountering Jirou to be conductive to longevity… (not that he was scared of anything, of course).

So: a wink and blown kiss for now. “Say hi to the little one for me <3”

Ryoma smirked softly, waving one hand at Niou dismissively. “Sure. See you when you get back.” He turned and began walking back to where he’d left Jiroh, hoping the other boy had at least had the presence of mind in all this mess to stay put. At this rate, maybe they’d make it back before morning classes. Not that he cared, but the fewer questions Hanamura asked, the better.
